    Default Optus Cable Modem

Has anyone been able to upgrade their cable modem to a better model without optus technician coming out to install.

Currently in use is a SB3100 which is only 10mbit. Need to upgrade to a SB5XXXX model to allow 100mbit connection.

Can you pickup someones from Ebay or here and use their unit.?

Optus will insist that a technician be sent out regardless.
On arrival he then contact Optus support and quote your MAC addy and your right to go.
Of course, your probably going to be $99 out of pocket.

How do I know you ask?
I have my brothers spare 5100 sitting here and Im still using the older 4200 model.

My parents got a new cable modem sent out to them from optus because there old one will stop working on April 18th, no optus technician required to come out and I am going there to install it tomorrow.

The modem they have is one of the original ones, Nortel i think it is and has 10mbit. I think it is only DOCSIS 1 and they are upgrading the network in the area and the DOCSIS 1 network will be switched off.

What I found is that on the SB3100 the maxed out speed is 550kb/s yet on a SB5XXX the speed is 1mb/s (where b is bytes not bits)
The only difference between the two is the network port speed (10mbit verses 100mbit)

Yeah want to avoid having a tech come out to read a MAC address seems a real waste of time as I need to stay home for 4 hour window for 5 second job. Plus the costs.

    @shortcity
I like the idea of a free upgrade to either the SB5100 or other but they have logs how often the modem is down and why. I tried the complaints line before and it didn't work for me.

    mate
    if youve got a sb3100
youve obviously been with optus for a very long time.

if your contracts up tell them you want a new modem or you'll jump ship and im pretty sure they will comply . You'll probably have to sign up for another 24 months though.

    best of luck
