Some years ago diagrams were published showing the effected areas around Sydney if a Nuclear devise was exploded at the prescribed altitude above the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
From memory I think the 'Blast' area was shown radiating out about a 100 miles (160ks).
Obviously this was broken down into 'Total', 'Major', 'Significant', 'Some' damage areas.
However one thing I remember was it didnt seem to take into account of the topography of Sydney.
I read that both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen because they had surrounding hills to contain and maximise the explosive effect.
Also from pictures after the blast showed any sort of solid embankment or very thick man made structure created a 'Shadow' and gave some protection.
If we were ever to be faced with the threat of Nuclear attack, of the two cities Sydney and Melbourne, I would feel that people in Sydney because of its rough irregular topography have a better chance of survival than Melbourne because its far more open.
The proof of the pudding would be an actual attack and that is one pudding I am only to happy to theorise about than actualy taste it.
But this is going back to the 50's when everyone and his dog in the USA was building a Bomb shelter, ala 'Duck and Cover'.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Most of the old, frail and pensioners would die quickly. I'd be dead without supplies of azathioprine or other immunosuppressant.

All the young would die within hours of discovering their iPhone no longer works.

They should make more post nuclear bomb movies as I also enjoy thinking about the situation but would never like it to happen.

I was looking for something else and happened on this. Here is the wording of the leaflet dropped in Japan after the first bomb was dropped.

The use of the bomb here most lightly saved more lives than it killed.

Leaflets were dropped over other Japanese cities shortly after the Hiroshima explosion. One version of the dropped leaflets read as follows:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TO THE JAPANESE PEOPLE:

America asks that you take immediate heed of what we say on this leaflet.

We are in possession of the most destructive explosive ever devised by man. A single one of our newly developed atomic bombs is actually the equivalent in explosive power to what 2000 of our giant B-29s can carry on a single mission. This awful fact is one for you to ponder and we solemnly assure you it is grimly accurate.

We have just begun to use this weapon against your homeland. If you still have any doubt, make inquiry as to what happened to Hiroshima when just one atomic bomb fell on that city.

Before using this bomb to destroy every resource of the military by which they are prolonging this useless war, we ask that you now petition the Emperor to end the war. Our president has outlined for you the thirteen consequences of an honorable surrender. We urge that you accept these consequences and begin the work of building a new, better and peace-loving Japan.

You should take steps now to cease military resistance. Otherwise, we shall resolutely employ this bomb and all our other superior weapons to promptly and forcefully end the war.

    EVACUATE YOUR CITIES.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is enough data available to show the effects of various types of Nuclear explosions and radiation poisoning (Bikini Atoll tests,Chernoble and the 3 mile Island power station melt downs)
During Viet Nam there were calls to 'NUKE' the Viet Cong. This would have been a futile effort due to the dense vegetation, scattered village type population and as time has show, the Vietnamese had a very extensive underground network.
Of course they can always build a BIGGER bomb, Hydrogen, Plutonium whatever but there is always the ultimate risk that it MIGHT, just maybe MIGHT trigger a chain reaction that could create a firestorm in the atmosphere ala' the 1950's 'End of the World' movies or even crack the planets mantle with equally devestating results.
At this time in our history, I would rate North Korea as the most unpredictable Nuclear power followed possibly by IRAQ, then India and Pakistan are on an equal threat level.
The USA,Russia and China I hope are too aware of the ultimate consequences if they step past the current sabre rattling postering policies they constantly engage in.
Could we actualy destroy our planet to cosmic dust, I really hope not but to destroy all that lives on the Earths surface, 99.9% chance we can so who wants to 'Press' the RED button to prove me wrong??

Right now we have major flooding in QLD, heavy snows and bitterly cold weather and tornados in the Northern Hemisphere all of which is putting pressure on our food sources.
Now whether this is just Nature doing what Nature does so well or a result of human caused 'Global Warming' I have no idea but as learjet posted re medication, we are all very vunerable to the vagaries of Nature let alone worrying about surviving a Nuclear event.

After seeing a space shuttle launch... I wanted to see something more spectacular.
I was hoping for an atomic bomb, so I was hoping that Pakistan and India would tango, or at least NK lob that piss arse cherry bomb over the fence.
Sadaam had a good program going but then the bloody yanks ####ed it up after the first gulf war. Spewin !
I'm now supporting an Iranian nuclear program, but they're getting cold feet.

I actually think Iran having a nuke would actually stabilise the Middle east. The Jews would start to think before then bullied the Muslims.

But I still want to fight mutants

Along with thermal and ionizing radiation plus blast effects there is another threat I did not know about as a by-product of a nuclear explosion. Nitrogen dioxide is produced which gives the reddish color of mushroom cloud. When in contact with water nitrogen dioxide makes nitric acid.

So along with fission products it might rain nitric acid.

There is probaly a hell of a lot we DONT know will happen if such a nuclear event did occur and HOPEFULLY its that uncertainty that wil deter that Button being pressed.

I am not sure the religion of peace is on the same page on that one or the wild card entrant North Korea might do it to because Kim got bored watching porn or something.
