Default My ip addy is sending death threats?????

I had a police officer knock on my door today saying he was doing a check for Vic police. Came in and wrote down the brand of my pc.
Apparently my ip address has been sending some sort of threats to someone in Melbourne.

Whats going on there, I beleve my wireless is secure so a neighbor shouldnt be stealing my internet, is there any other sort of explanation for this happening?
I guess the cops dont knock on your door for downloading torrents?

Only wrote down your PC brand.... that's all?

Sounds a little suss to me.

It could be legit, or something sinister.

Was the police officer in uniform? In a marked police car?

    One or two police officers?

    Did you get their names/numbers?

Did they identify which station they were from?

Just to be sure it's not some sort of scam, contact your local police station immediately to have them check if the police who visited you are genuine.

I was asking, more to try and see possibly (and it would only be a guess) how serious and where it was coming from. that is if you complain to an ISP they will tell you to contact police, similarly to complain to police requires a few other things to happen before they knock on a door? (from what I have read/heard which is heresay at best)

If they had a complaint about death threat's from your IP

    Then

1: complaint had to made to isp
    2: complaint checked by isp
3: if found referred to police
4: the police would arrive and would tell you who they are and would also have a warrant
5: they would have asked you to go with them for a formal interview at the cop shop
6: they would have taken the pc for evidence
7: they would not have just check brand of pc and left because you could have then destroyed any evidence

one word comes to mind here

    SUSSS

and only one action to take comes to mind here

GO PERSONALLY TO LOCAL COP SHOP AND TELL THEM

there is no way i would have ever let them in without seeing proper identification let alone a warrant

100% sure he was a cop had the car/gun/radio and in uniform
He didnt know a lot about the complaint like what web site or how it was happening, he had a email addy on his paperwork and asked if it was mine it wasn't.
He asked to come in and have a look at my computer I said I would rather not then he said he just wanted to look at it not use it so I said ok.

Then you are under no obligation to allow them access to your property with very few exceptions.

    1) Write down everything that's happened thus far, including the officers details if you have them and the contents of the conversation between yourself and the officer.
    2) Seek legal advice IMMEDIATELY. Even if nothing comes of this, you're better to be armed with as much information as possible.
    3) Don't allow anyone else access without a warrant.
    4) If any one else rocks up, ask for all of their credentials up front.

Yeah I know but I didnt want him coming back with one and kicking my door down.
I find it's usually better not to give them a hard time and I didnt have anything to hide.

actually I not sure, but I do not believe this to be the case, the way its written implies the ISP would refer it to the police, and I do not believe that to be the case.

They tend too palm it off to the complainant for the person making the complaint, to approach police.

"death threats" perhaps fall into another category, I wonder how these death threats were made, via e-mail/IM???

I'd be nuking PC and going from scratch....

edit: re-reading, they had an email address and it was not yours?

I dont think there would have been a lot of politeness if bomb threats were made!

I do however agree with an above statement about no warrant, no enter!

Going by your listed location of Tassie, maybe thats how they do it down there?
    Wasnt your Uncle by chance?

    But seriously,
Like wtf, knowing what pc brand you had would help him?
Maybe he was scouting around for something else.

without giving up too much detail.
how does your wifi give out ips (dhcp/static) not that it would make THAT much difference.

how many pcs connect too you "network", do you have kids? are they the ones that connect too your wifi and have been infected with something pointing too your IP.

the fact that so far, its been said, that a Threat via email and its not YOUR email addy (so possibly someone is using an email thats originating from your IP)??? guessing.

what kind off encryption are you using on your AP? when was the last time you changed it. what kind off passphrase are you using... something with 10+chars all mixed up a written down like "(*hGfvvb$)8&h.(" do you leave your connection on 24? etc etc

same with you PC , has it been sitting around being used as is for a while.

going back too a point porkop made, if the police had any serious concerns about bomb/death threats I doubt all they would do is jot down a brand name.

all just guesses and speculation at this stage... but its an interesting story for sure. Be great to find out the answer at some stage.

Malwarebytes keeps a copy of scan results in text format. It might pay to find it and print it out to keep as a reference. Some proof your computer is/was infected in case the police come back.

    What antivirus are you running.

A very similar thing happened to me a few years ago except they didn't even bother to come around they just called me.
The officer asked what I knew about making bombs , at this time I had no idea what he was on about, but he explained the complaint in detail to me.
This guy was posting bomb making instructions to blow his house and family up using my full name and email address, Apparently this guy called my ISP and they told him to contact the Federal Police , I had to explain to them the originating IP was not mine , funnily enough this moron didn't realize the post's he made led to his own IP address.
Not sure what happened to him they said they couldn't tell me.
