Default 2 men arrested in illegal pay tv raid

This is just off the wires....

Two Victorian men have been arrested after Federal police smashed a nationwide syndicate producing illegal pay TV encryption cards, giving free access to Foxtel and Austar.

Hundreds of so-called "gamma" cards and set-top decoders were seized in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales following a six month investigation.

Police say there could be up to 50 thousand fake encryption cards being used around the country.

    More info coming through....

A 43-year-old man from Mount Waverley and a 27-year-old man from Sebastopol will face court in Melbourne and Ballarat today.

The AFP advised the men have been charged with making, distributing and selling fake smart cards or `gamma' cards.

50,000 cards at $500 average = $25 million reasons to keep the information quite.

    Thats alot of legit subscription.

They will be made example of to deter others.

Edit; it will be interesting to see what happens when they find the method being used for card details, or the source, or even the card details themselves.
Looks like their customers are going to be watching blank screens.

Big chance the odd gamma will stop working shortly then

The Australian Federal Police today arrested two men in Victoria after a six-month investigation into an alleged pay TV piracy syndicate.

They found hundreds of fake pay TV encryption cards and set-top boxes after executing 10 search warrants in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

Pay TV uses encoded signals that subscribers can access with a unique smartcard installed in a set-top box.

Pirates use fake smart cards, or "gamma" cards, with set-top decoders to receive signals from the Foxtel and Austar networks without a subscription.

The two men, a 43-year-old from Mount Waverley and a 27-year-old from Sebastopol, were charged with making, distributing and selling the pirate cards.

Police say there may now be up to 50,000 fake pay TV cards in use across Australia.

They also seized several computers and $169,000 from a Sydney property and 18 boxes of illegal fireworks from a house in Victoria.

Both men will face court today and could spend up to five years in jail if convicted.

Why only mention Foxtel & Austar? As usual, most folk when thinking of pay tv think of only those two, its an insult to other providers! Besides why Foxtel, has nothing to do with them per se???

Yep lots of Gamma's will fall over in the next week or so
If its true that only 4 people in aus can make the card then 1/8 of the cards will fall, going on the story that you get 2 sets of details, when you buy from the gamma team
I still reckon you get the program to read the details from a austar card, i cant see the gamma team being sent heap of austar cards to pull the details from

I wouldn't like to be in these two guys shoes.
I feel, they will be made an example of.

geez I'm glad on the one hand that I hadn't forked out the $ if the above is any indication, but i guess even though these two have been taken out of the equation the experts still have work out the gammas, but then, if they have been arrested then one would presume all equipment would have been confiscated would may or may not include loaders, TC's Prov id's ect ect......I wonder how long they will last?

Well, the game has entered a new phase.

If we assume that the main players in the Australian gamma operation have been wiped out, then the gamma team will only make further money if they drop the price of their 'services' to a level that a new local player feels is a comfortable risk/reward ratio. No-one is likely to take the risk at current prices if the arrested guys get 3-5 years of having to guard their arses in the showers at Barwon Prison.

Otherwise, the gamma team either withdraw completely from our market and try to sell to another Irdeto market, or perhaps they call it quits, retire to the Carribeean, and release their OS and methodology into the wild, and we're back to 2001 once again.

2 men out of 4 makes 50% of cards, isn't it?
Assuming these two were at the top of the chain, they can lead straight to the team supply.
