    Question Acquiring network address?

    Hi All,

Setting up daughters pc for our home wireless network. D-link card installed fine, connects to network, says it's acquiring network address then sits there doing nothing still acquiring address. All pc's running XP pro. Any clues? Wireless networks not my forte.

BTW Tried shutting firewall n antivirus software down.

    1. Don't use Dlink, they seem to give nothing but trouble.

    But if you have to....

Find out what IP range your wireless router uses (usually between 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.255) and then set enter the routers et-up section and set a fixed IP address for your daughters computer. (If you're not sure how to do this, reply with the make and model of your router) Next, go to your daughter's computer and assign the same IP address to her system, this can be done by going to control panel - network connections - right click on wireless network connection and then choose properties - select Internet Properties (TCP/IP) and select properties - then click on "Use the following IP address" and enter your information there.

You have t o set up up your IP addy, subnetmask ans gateway
to match that of your Wireless router

Just right click on the wireless device and select properties
and then double click on tcp/ivp4 and change from auto to use the following ip addy and us following dns sever

and just change them from there

    My router details are
    ip addy 192.168.1.1
    dns is 192.168.1.1

so i just put this into the computer

    ip addy 192.168.1.5
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    default gateway 192.168.1.1

    dns server 192.168.1.1

    hope this helps

Hi, I am having similar problems. Just wondering where the numbers in subnet mask came from and why they are different from the rest? I can't get a new lappy to connect with vista Thanks

the subnet mask sets the range of the IP addresses, ie 255.255.255.0 means the 255 address from say 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.255 are the available IP addresses except the first and last.

Another thing you could look at if you are using a secured network.
Is make sure you have typed the correct Key.
And also make sure you have the correct key number
EG: Key 1, Key 2, Key 3, or Key 4.
I had a similar problem and it was because i had assigned the wrong key.
Picked up network address straight away once i corrected it.

    Hi specs65,

    What model D-Link Router/Modem?

Do you have SP3 installed on the PC, if you do, the D-Link wireless card will not connect. Other brands of wireless cards will connect.

Are you trying to connect via Windows or the D-Link utility?

Make sure you disable Windows trying to manage your Wireless Network Connection by,

In Network Connections, Righ click on Wireless Network Connection and then select properties, then Left Click on the Wireless Networks tab at the top and Uncheck "Use Windows to configure my Wireless Network Connections" and then go OK to save changes

Then use the D-Link wireless utility to configure your Wireless Network Connection

Sing out if you need more help

Silly question..... Do you have DHCP enabled at the router?
Reality is an invention of my imagination.

255.255.255.0 is the most common. This is because it is the highest set local ip address range , eg , 192.168.0.1 - 255.255.255.0 in most modem/routers. You would at a guess have to change your modem/router settings to a submask of 255.255.255.255 depending on what the other numbers in your IP address are.

Edit : ssrattus explains it better here in post 7

More confused now. Looking at my modem via the ip address, broadband connection tells me a different ip addy and different primary dns and different secondary dns from the ip addy i type into the address bar of my browser. Any guides for dummies? Thanks

They would be the IP address and DNS addresses issued by your ISP.

What modem/router do you have ?

If you have shared that modem connection it doesn't matter what the modem IP addy is
It is important that your network card/wireless router has the right settings as that is what all
your other devices will be looking for

Wireless to another lappy (brand new), vista, limited connectivity, can see the modem but no connection to internet/
Also a wii can connect wirelessly easy.

Just copy all your wireless details from the xp computer
but just change the ip addy up a number or 2
    say xp says
    IP 192.168.1.11
    sub 255.255.255.2
    gate 192.168.1.1
    preferred dns 192.168.1.1

Put all that info in the wireless network details under TCP/IPv4
but just change the ip addy to 192.168.12
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
