I would also like to see a tutorial or similar, I have a nuvi 1390 and dont know how to update either. ANy help would be much appreciated!
I am trying to update my mates Garmin to the latest map of Australia/NZ.
The new map is 2011.2 which is apparently unlocked. The more I read in the forums the more confused I get! I have upgraded my Tom Tom several times with no problems but cant get to grips with the Nuvi 1490.
I have backed up his data to my computer but dont know where to put the new map....
Is there a easy guide to updating the map?

Not sure if you need the info anymore or not, but I figured it out on my device. You have to create a new folder on the root of the device called Map and then copy the image file here and you will then be able to access the new map by going to Settings-Map-Info and it should be there to select. Everything else I had read previously said you had to copy the img file to the Garmin directory, but that didnt work for me.

Thanks for the reply, I still want to update his map! Tried what you said, made a folder in the root directory called Map and copied the new map to it.
Map folder was called "City Navigator Australia and New Zealand NT 2011.20.gmap" This did not show up when I went into Settings/Map/Info
I then deleted the folder in the Map folder and copied the contents of "City Navigator Australia and New Zealand NT 2011.20.gmap" into the Map folder but this did not work either!
What contents have you put into the created Map folder?
Yes a easy to read tutorial would be great!
Well done glenb83. After hours of reading the forums it was as easy as you said. Just had to find the right file to put in the map folder.
Now have updated map
Hey guys , I'm probably a bit late on this for you but I'll post it anyway to help others.
You almost got it right. Your solution actually works & would be appropriate for secondary maps if they are small enough to fit on internal memory, however for City Nav you would need to put the JCV file in the right place to get the latest Junction View.
Might as well put the Map in the right place as well - see below for how.
What you need to do to replace City Nav with a newer unlocked map version in a Nuvi 1490T, 1390T or similar, is first turn off Garmin Agent if you have it installed on your PC, then make sure in windows explorer under Tools/Folder Options/View, make sure that you have "Show Hidden Files & Folders" checked as well as removing the tick from beside " Hide protected operating system files" a couple of lines below. Then apply.
Now your ready to start.
Now after connecting Nuvi with USB cable you will be able to see on your Nuvi a folder called System.
1: make a backup copy of this folder & any others you feel important & save to your PC for justin.
2: Open the System folder on your Nuvi
3: Replace old gmapprom.img with new gmapprom.img (say yes to file overwright/replace - you've saved a copy for justin) This process may take a while to complete.
4: Open JCV Folder. Delete old JCV file - assuming you have a new one for this map set? If not skip steps 4 & 5. (you've saved a copy for justin)
5: Put new JCV file in JCV folder.
6: Now close windows explorer & eject USB drive (your Nuvi)
7: Remove USB cable
8: Let your Nuvi turn off
Job done, your new map will load when you turn it back on.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Tiny
