We got one into my company to trial. Its the USB one, although I haven't played with it yet. Is this the one you are talking about?
Hi All,
Has anyone tried the optus wireless modem that they are advertising? If so whats it like? And can you buy a modem that will do the same thing as the optus one?

Comfortably numb...
And NO, Google is NOT my friend...
Hi bit pit,
Yes it is, can you let me know how it goes after you have used it for a while.
Thanks
myf360f1,
OK, first impressions.
Small, very easy to use, no CD required as it comes wih the software and drivers onboard.
Coverage seems ok, suspect it may be a bit lacking in fringe areas. Appeared to drop back to GPRS speeds inside my building. To be expected.
GUI is pretty good, shows usage patterns so you can keep an eye on your downloads.
Uses an Optus SIM, so I would say you could use it on a 3G phone and use the phone as a modem via Bluetooth etc. Haven't tried it yet.
Some pretty good deals on at the moment (4 months free on 24 month contract).

Hi bit_pit,
Thanks for the info, you said it has a sim card, is that inside the dongle?
Cheers
Yup, little slide out draw.
There is a 04xxxxxxxx number with it as well, hence I think it is just a standard Optus 3G Sim.

Hi,
I have unlocked my Optus E220 just by updating the firmware.(didn't believe it was possible till I saw a couple of posts on other forums)
Earlier models of the E220 USB Modem are easy to unlock(firmware) and some of the newer ones need to have the unlocking proceedure run on them.
The Optus E220 now works on Vista and is currently using a Three Prepaid SIM.
The speed (downlink) capability has increased from 3.6 to 7.2Mbps.
I have not updated the Optus Dashboard, just created a new profile (APN) and all is working ok. ie Intermet and SMS and Email.
Now I'm going to update the firmware on the Three E220.
And, they can be used with LINUX, seen some posts giving instructions on how to do it.
Oh, by the way, the Wireless USB modem currently advertised by Optus is an E169
Yes that's right and it's not locked and does 900Mhz and 2.1Ghz Hsdpa the E220 only does 2.1Ghz
They both do 900Mhz, 1800Mhz, 1900Mhz GPRS

so in theory should be able to buy prepaid 3g Wireless Sim card and use it in 3G Mobile phone hooked up by USB cable to Laptop/PC and it will work like Optus USB modem get access to internet ?
anyone tried this .. as considering just buying the sim card and slapping in my Nokia 6110 as it supports 2100 3G and 900 GSM networks ... not wanting to pay $199 for USB modem ..
