    Default Vast regional news

    Hi,

Whenever I try one of the news channels, around this time (6.00pm) I never see any news on them...just the scene loop.

How do you know when the news is on?

From what I understand, most of the news channels aren't operating yet.

Thats something I didnt think of untill I saw Viewer's post is will we be able to see all the Regional News Channels or will we be restricted to our own area coverage like the 600 channel is on Austar ??
Someone may ask why would a viewer be interested in the news from another area but it may be your old location, family or friends live there or some event of interest occuring there your area news may not see the need to cover.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Some QLD news have already been televised, but timings have not been consistent. So it would seem all regional news channels are open to all activated card holders
But, think you would find that most (not all) regional, rural & remote news only occur during Monday to Friday, as well as state based news.
Weekends are usually a state news bulletin and not locally based.

May pay to check them out tonight around 6pm your local, though the channels are shared with other regions, so it's anyones guess as to when they are televised and in what region order.

Would be nice to know some sort of timings, so you know when to watch.

A website and brief description in the EPG would be the way to go.

Something tells me VAST is designed to be in no way better than terrestrial. Interstate news for everyone is "better" than what we get on the ground. I don't think they'll allow it, to be honest.

For my regional area channel 4 says either channel 410,416, or 418...nothing but the loop on again. Just looked, nothing on any of them.

I would have thought that they'd be ready to go..wonder why a delay?

It's all strange, I was watching 7 news on sctv, and every ad break, we get the loop. Why would they cut them out..the promo's all show for their own material, but in the ad break, the loop.

All seems a bit odd after using Aurora. When on that we just got everything.

Dunno if anyone has noted, but there is nothing on the epg for many of the add on stations like gem etc.

It's what the HD terrestrial channels used to do when they didn't have an extra 'desk' for the extra channels to insert ads etc.

Interesting. Which 7 News was it? Does it only show that loop during the news or other programming too? They've been showing a loop on HD for years, but this is first time I've heard it happening on one of their primary channels.

Just ask anyone in Darwin or Tassie how annoying it is. They had it on their Channel Ten and SCTV HD for ages, during every ad break!

Not sure smacca...just had it on in the background between 6-630pm...

I'm on 10 central south now, epg says 7.00pm project on, but it is something else "glee" I think(??)...and they play the loop when ads are on

Sorry...epg guide is right, but the panel that comes on when you press"i", is one hour out.

Can confirm that activated vast cards do give access to all Regional News channels, so you can watch news from any region except WA atm.
On Monday night 20th Dec, most Regional news channels became active at 10pm with most still going after 12am.

    Unfortunately start timings are un-predictable.
Each news went for 30min, with some starting the next region straight away at 10:30pm, some started at 10:40pm and others started at 10:50pm.
This went on until after I gave up watching after midnight. The loop was playing in the gaps.

This makes it extremely difficult to know when your local news will start. Confused yet Well so am I.

Anyway, all regionals news channels have local adds for that particular news region.

Big thanks to "Windy" with his post listing all regions for each News channel (401-420). See post 3 here

All VAST Regional News channels from 401 to 420 covered all their regions in this 2hrs except these:
    409 Mt Gambier (WIN)
    410 No News Broadcast (SCTV)
    411 Broken Hill (SCTV)
    419 No News Broadcast (PRIME)

Thanks for that...I guess there must be a news before 10.00pm WA time, otherwise , with the time difference, you'd want to be keen in the East to stay up that late.

I think VAST must be in embryonic(??) stage, as there is lots of gaps there that need fixing at the moment.

Another head question I ask myself...if you live in one of the regions that say has sctv as your home sation, on satellite, you will not see your local ads, as they are "looped out". I did note that Imparja still had some ads on though?

Hmm...the plot thickens, or else I am?

It's more a case of Southern Cross master control in Canberra being unable to insert local ads for the short-term, not because it's a channel covering multiple states and timezones.

If I was to guess, I'd say SCTV South is a dirty Tasmanian feed, with 7 News Sydney or Melbourne inserted over the top of SCNews Tas. I'll bet SCTV North has a watermark on the top right corner, but SCTV South doesn't.

VAST News Channels have finally been re-labelled from "Regional News 1-20", to something that resembles their network (i.e. Prime, NBN, WIN, 7QLD, S.C.) and the news coverage area.

I've listed some here, also see Windy post below for the Vast news channel numbering.

    WIN: Mackay Rock
    WIN: Bund SCst Toow
    WIN: Orange Wagga
    WIN: Wgong Canberra
    WIN: TAS Mt Gambier
    WIN: Albury Gippslnd...

    S.C. QLD NT NW VIC
    S.C. TAS SA & BHill

    7QLD: Cairns Towns
    7QLD: Wide Bay SCst...

    NBN: Gold Cst Lismore
    NBN: Coffs Hbr Tamw...

    Prime: NSW & VIC
    Prime: Orange Wagga

The 6pm local news for the Prime Central West area of NSW (Orange/Dubbo) was rebroadcast at 8pm on ch 420.
But so far everything else appears to be either QLD or Victorian oriented.
I am not very happy currently with the TEN 5pm news as it is composed almost entirely of Victorian news and while it is interesting, it is not relevant to us in NSW particularly with a State election to be held in March.
It would be nice if they could put the State Capitol news on one of those News channels if they dont want to change the 'Home' channel for some reason.

But VAST has almost 2 years to go yet before the anaolg shutdown is completed and Aurora fades into the setting sun so lots can hopefully happen.
