Default FTA equipment - Newbie Q

Im trying to learn about satellite tv and starting in australia.
From posts I have read its possible to get Free to Air channels from around Australia. I have a 80 cm dish with lnb (Ku setup right?) and the box is a multivision with a card slot and an ethernet port.

So do I need to program any cards to do this?

I know this is a basic Q, ive searched and found all that I can.

    Thanks

I had a recent newbie thread which has some decent answers in it

However, quick answers to your questions>
    1. It is possible to get FTA channels from Oz/Asia as long as youre kit is setup properly and your dish pointing in the right place. Im not sure about the HD channels, but there is a thread around closeby where this was answered!

    2. If you are referring to the Oz FTA channels(7,9,10 etc) they are available but you need to be pointing in the right spot to get them.

I personally think the non-Oz FTA we can get down here is a bit unspectacular, but it all depends on what you like, and whether you can speak an Asian langauge

This bit is not correct, 7, 9, and 10 are not available via satellite
    - they do not need to be as they are mainly for capital cities and have translators etc., for country centres.

You can find ABC and SBS as FTA via satellite, and a couple of commercial services which are becoming difficult to find.

There is also the AURORA system designed for viewers who have poor or no access to terrestrial TV signals. For this you need an authorised smartcard which gives access to selected commercial services on a geographical location basis. You will find information on the AURORA system with a search of the internet, this site and vetrun.com etc.

There is not a lot to watch as FTA in this country, every bugger wants or needs your money...

    Thanks guys.

Really Im interested in how everything works, so I am not all that fussed as to what I can or cant get. Anything else is a bonus.

I guess all thats left now is to put it all together and give it a whack!

    Cheers!

yes, my apologies... re 7,9,10 As Im in melbourne I have no probs getting a quality signal for these channels via the DVBT in my mediacenter rig, so have bever worried about it. I can see how it'd be a bugger for those out in the wilderness ....

Of course there is the "Australia TV network" which will give you a scoop of stuff from all the channels

    good luck OP!
