    Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick
One of the best around at the price and has the twist handle for rudder control.
Should be able to get one for under $50

Yep, 1946 is the game of choice for me as well. I love the AAA, I have most of the mods installed but unfortunately some maps still default to Russian since installing the mods. unfortunately clear instructions on how to resolve this are scarce on the AAA site. Diggler, have you loaded "The Slot" yet? I love it. Also, do you use DCG?

Another recommendation for the Logitech, works great with Flight Sim X.
Coding in C is like sending a 3 year old to do groceries. You gotta tell them exactly what you want or you'll end up with a cupboard full of pop tarts and pancake mix.

I have the Logitech Wingman 3D force and can only say: don't get it!
It has no mechanical centre position. I assume the force feedback is supposed to centre it but it doesn't work properly. It will suddenly shift to one side even standing still on the runway where crosswinds can not have any effect.

This is not the first time I have been disappointed with Logitech products so I can only hope the above mentioned Extreme 3D Pro is better.

Try to find a shop where they have joysticks on display.
Important is smooth increasing counter force out of a well defined centre.

Long time ago I had a generic joystick with a socket for external rudder pedals. I ended up building the pedals myself. That project ended in building a proper steering column that eventually fell apart from wear and tear from the kids. It even had little shock absorbers for a more realistic control feeling.

I am not a friend of twisting a joystick to control the rudder.
