That looks alot like corrupt video memory. It could be kicking in during a game when it tries to read/write to a part of memory which is corrupt but not usually used by windows.
It could also be a driver issue though, It may not be switching from 3d Rendering back to 2d rendering correctly.
Well let us eliminate the easiest first. Download the latest ATI catalyst drivers for your video card and install. See if it helps. If no change then try putting another video card in and see if the problem persists. If it persists, then the issue is a little more sinister. If it goes away then chances are you have a defective X1950
Also, does this occur as soon as you try to run the game. ie. You double click icon, screen flashes black then comes back to the desktop all garbled?
This could also be a heat issue but that depends on the previous question.
