    Default Thunderbird / Windows 7 / TPG

    Hi,
Just got a new pc with windows 7 and no email.

    Wanting to use Thunderbird.

    Downloaded thunderbird 3.1.7

I instal, and it asks me for my tpg info.

    It configures auto.

When I try to send or receive, I get a box saying "logon to server mail.tpg.com.au failed" It asks me to retry/enter new password/cancel.

Everything keeps going around in circles.

I can go into the tpg postmaster and put in the same username and password and view my emails online, but nothing via thunderbird...any clues please?

I have been at this all afternoon, and now am going ape shyte with it.

    Thanks

Hi viewer, you could try this

change your connection security from STARTTLS to SSL/TLS in the account setup.

EDIT :- tools - account settings - server settings - then security settings right hand side.

Delete the account and let it do another auto setup, when it detects the settings change the incoming to pop and try that. and you might still need to change settings to SSL/TLS

Mick...thanks again...my version doesn't have the same interface as yours..this is 3.1.7...is yours a different one, as I don't seem to be able to setup as you suggest.

Have the same problem with mine, just keep clicking it off and go to Recieve mail when it stops and you are in
There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"

It's 3.1.7 as well. Go into tools - account settings then at the bottom of the left you'll find Account actions click on and select add mail account and that will bring up another box I hope put your details back in and It should restart the auto setup then you can change the setting I suggested.

Have a look at my last post. If not Hotmail(live) I believe has an option for adding email accounts so you may have to set one of them up.

Download Eudora OSE and try that.
It is another version of Thunderbird and possibly easier to set up.

    From the TPG Site

What are the incoming and outgoing mail servers?
The incoming and outgoing mail server addresses are the same.
for smtp its mail.tpg.com.au on port 25
    for pop3 its mail.tpg.com.au on port 110
for imap its mail.tpg.com.au on port 143

    using tls or ssl:
for smtps its mail.tpg.com.au on port 25
    for pop3s its mail.tpg.com.au on port 995
for imaps its mail.tpg.com.au on port 993

    Check the ports are correct.

Also if you have not already done so, read the set up guide on the TPG Website.

Thanks mick, but whatever I do, I cannot get that same window you have shown in your post. Are you on windows 7 ?

Why can something so easy to others become so complicated for others. I haven't even loadedoffice or anything here yet, so I can't even give you a screen shot..

Sorry to be a pain, I know you have tried hard to help, and I appreciate that very much.

Yes it is on windows 7. Seeing as you have office load it on and use Office Outlook as your email client mate.

    Have a look at this.

EDIT installing the mail option only at the moment to see what it's all about.

EDIT I installed the mail part only and mail setup is much the same as outlook express and works great.

This is what it looks like when running. I only installed the Mail part of the installer.
