Might be an idea to test to see if you are getting any volts out of the
fan connection on the mother board
But don't be tempted to leave it and use the lappy with it as it is
Hi
Have a laptop whereby the cpu fan doesnt spin at all. Have checked connection, is OK. Have loaded speedfan, doesnt show up fan speeds, only temperatures. Anyone know why? Strange thing is even under load is not getting very hot at all.
Have tried another 2 cpu fans on this laptop, both dont work. The original fan is 5V 1.3W, the 2 other fans I have tried are 5V .4A and 5V .5A.
Have tried the "faulty" fan on another laptop, the 2, 5V .4a and .5a work fine, the faulty fan, started spinning once and then stopped after a few seconds, has not worked since. Have left going whilst laptop getting hot, so in theory it should spin up.
Is the fan faulty or a faulty fan controller on the original laptop? Should I be getting an exact match of the cpu fan to make sure or can I use different power rating fans to test?
Cheers

When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
your power management scheme probably is set to low cpu performance, so its staying cool and no need for the fan to spin......
Also the fans you tried are about double the current draw of the original.
You may have stuffed something.
z80, I would have thought the fan would at least start up when the laptop is first turned on and then turn off. Sorry i dont understand electronics much, the original fan says 1.3W (doesnt say anything about Amps), whilst the others are .4A and .5A. So I should be using exactly the same fan power ratings?
Cheers

You should get a reading from 5-12 volts
but you might have to let it warm up 1st
I think all laptops cpu fan spins up when you 1st turn them on
but I might be wrong
z80 idea is defiantly worth checking 1st
should be able to see some settings in the Bios
