Default VAST retailer quote of the month

    Guys

When my wife told me this I almost collapsed laughing. When returning my faulty VAST box, the guy on the counter started with:

    1) Asked my wife if she was an Alice Springs local
    2) Wife said of course yes, why do you ask
    3) PhD behind the counter said " AHH, thats the problem, these systems are so smart they can ping you from the satellite and work out exactly where you are. If you are in Alice Springs it will disable itself because of the ping..

The PhD's boss came out, grabbed the box and put it on the bench. They both returned and said "yes maam, the box is stuffed". PhD wandered off without a word....

There are reasons for education in this world...there are technical courses thats SHOULD stop this black magic.

I dont particularly want to be nasty but seriously...........

    Pete

    Talking Start of story?

Pray, do tell what symptoms the box displayed to be able to say it was stuffed?
Was it self inflicted with a DIY install, or just conjecture because of some misunderstanding?
Not that I agree with the prognosis proffered, but how sure can you be that it wasn't ' tongue in cheek ' ?
After all, if you live in Alice Springs, how do you qualify for a full VAST service?

    1) Box stuffed due to looping reboots. Confirmed by UEC "it is pining for the Fjords"

    2) Self install yes. If I did something stupid then I'd own up to it. Ive been an enthusiast for many years on Fux/Aust/I701, Nokia D-Box, logging etc etc etc. If I stuck 240v onto the LNB input then I reckon I deserve what I suffered :-)

    3) Unfortunately the dealer tried to sell me a PL-259 last year for $10...when buying the VAST box I happened to listen to a conversation between an 18 wheeler owner and the guy at the counter and the technical jargon relating to the CB band kind of spun me out.

I used to work in an electronics shop in 1985, doing CB installs etc and have a HAM ticket so I'm a little RF savy. What I heard him say only propogates "the earth is flat" talk. Seriously, this is why there are so many conspiracy theories in this world because its the clueless trying to be technical :-)

    4) How do I qualify, I dont know, I dont make the rules. I rang Digital Ready who transfered me to the VAST folks and yup, I can get it no problems. The town is waiting for Central Comms to erect the new antennas however cant be done till they strengthen the tower...

So not trying to be a smartass but I think I'm at least equally qualifed as the guy behind the counter to make a coment :-)

    Cheers..pete

Mate, nobody has used words like "methinks" and "pray tell" for over a hundred years. I know you're no spring chicken, but surely you're not that old?

Talking Methinks Thee doth protest too much.

At this point in time, it would seem that Bil Gates has obfuscated the true meaning of the English Language and thee are but a pawn in his annihilation of what is a Majestic Language.

Beery, I love the English language. But it's a bit like cooking. Sometimes less is more.

Your old-fashioned lexiphanic terms and phrases sometimes can come across as a tad pretentious.

I think I've hijacked this thread enough, so adios on this subject amigo.

This 'Ping from the Satelitte for Location' is on a par with the Telstra shop employee who 2 years ago told me a 'Wireless Internet Dongle' could not be used in a Desk top computer because and I quote "The components in a Laptop are SMALLER than a desk top so the dongle cant be used'
This 'Dongle' used the PCMIA of a laptop but he wouldnt accept that I could buy a card for the desktop to use it.
Also this harks back to the little RED LED some LNB's had years ago and the story was this enabled the PAYTV company to fly over and see who was pirating their signal.........

Dont you just love these stories??
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Tainted with Bill Gates' " Yankee Doodle ".

Date "Lexiphanic" was first used in popular English literature: sometime before 1914. ()
