Default New Xbox 360 DVD drives

    Hi all,

Thought I'd let the masses know that Microsoft have a new DVD drive (revision) that has been unleashed into the wild which at the moment only appears to be found in 360's that have recently been fixed at Microsoft service centres (like mine godammit). The drive has a manufactured date of April 2008. .

At the moment it appears the drive is unmodifiable but stranger things have happened.........tez

Fixed by Micrsoft. Was it the red ring of death mate? Or smething to do with the dvd drive that would necessitate replacement? And was your driver firmware modified before you sent it in?

Yeah, ring of death but my drive was sticky, if there was no disc in it you had to knock on the drive door after you pressed the eject button to get it to open so I don't know if they did it because of that or what.

Old drive was flashed but set it back to normal before sending it in.

Don't know what the newer BenQ drives were like but this new drive is a hell of a lot quieter than my old Toshiba-Samsung.......tez

    Ramrod,

Check the link in the original post, there's pics of the casing of the drive (ie. model and fw details) and of the board itself. Mine is pretty much exactly the same as that though I haven't bothered opening up the actual drive.

So far it appears to only be found in repaired units within Australia according to the Xbox-Scene post. Not sure about eeprom business, that's a familiar word but that's about as far as my knowledge goes of eeprom. According to one guy he's tried to read the fw via dosflash and mtkflash with no luck.

All that said, by all means please find a solution and let me know asap

    ............tez

Fuk..... I have had a 360 sitting here for nearly 2 months waiting to be sent back, and I only just sent in the form for replacement and was going to post it tommorow.

I hope I don't get 1 of these new drives.

Is there only one service centre for MS in aus? If so where did you send it to teztickles?

If I remember right punxor you're from the same area as me so no doubt you'll be sending yours to Teleplan in Chullora too.

    Fingers crossed mate!

OK the pics are really crap seems to me the flash is within the DVD processor chip if thats the case the key would be processed within the dvd mpu itself
But why epoxy the pins of the DVD mpu ?

All xbox 360 repairs get sent to Teleplan in Chullora afaik.

Just sit tight and wait a week or 2 and see what the scene develops. These things can take some time.
By reading this, you have already given me control over a tiny slice of your mind

Got my premium unit back last week with the new BenQ drive (had a 79 drive before).
Also got my core unit back about 3 weeks ago with a hitachi drive but originally had a MS28.
Be interesting to see what my 3rd unit (a premium unit) comes back with this week (had a hitachi drive in it originally).

BTW each console that has been repaired has had an additional heat sink added to the GPU heat sink so the additional excutor fan cannot be installed any more.

They are intentionally changing them now that you can't mod them.
When this 3 yr warranty came out they had the 1st gen BenQ & it couldnt be modded also, so they would always swap your drive with that. Once it was hacked, they started leaving your original drive in there, & just changing out the mobo. Now they are starting to change them out again......until they get hacked!!
