    Default Software Updates

    Hi All,

I notice the Altech UEC web site listed a software update for the DSD 4121 today.

    Has anyone tried it yet

    VAST Satellite Receivers

DSD4121 Software version 2.11 L30 (2011-01-14) ZIP or Self extracting EXE

That's why I'm asking the question. I would have assumed that also, but then why bother listing it online?
Suppose I should pull my finger out & just try it!

UEC used to make software downloads available on their South African website for their early Sat. decoders - would be intersting to get one for the 4121.

There might be an update, but you still can't polish a turd.

Now the firmware is available - surely someone can reverse engineer it or tinker with it..

The text section at the end of the firmware code looked interesting - containing brief info on the firmware (I viewed the firmware file - upgrade.uec - in UltraEdit - although any text editor will do)

Wish I knew a lot more about the code they use - been far too long since I played this sort of stuff.

Here's the contents of the text file that accompanies the update on the UEC site:

    1. Format USB drive to FAT32. In Windows go to "My Computer" and right click the drive letter corresponding to your USB key then choose "Format". In the "File system" otion choose "FAT32" then press start. A warning will be displayed informing you the cotents of this drive will be deleted. Press OK.
    2. Copy the included file "upgrade.uec" to the USB stick.
    3. GO back to "My computer", right click the drive corresponding to the USB stick and select EJECT.
    4. Remove the USB stick from your PC.
    5. Remove power from your DSD4121 decoder and insert the USB stick into the back of the DSD4121 decoder.
    6. While holding down the "<CH" and "CH>" buttons on the front panel of the DSD4121 decoder reinsert the power cable.
7 Keep the "<CH" and "CH>" buttons depressed untill the front panel fo the DSD4121 decoder shows a spinning circle.
8 The upgrade will now start and should be complete within about 4 minutes. After completion the DSD4121 will reboot itself and startup normally. You can now remove the USB stick from the DSD4121 decoder.

NOTE: Not all USB sticks are supported by the DSD4121. If the upgrade fails it could be because the USB drive is not supported.

    Known working USB sticks:

    IMATION 4GB.
    IMATION 128MB HMDS-128C
    KINGSTONE Datatraveler 4GB
    SANDISK CRUZER MICRO 8GB

    Known NOT working USB sticks:
    KINGSTON Datatraveler 2GB

After following the above destructions, all I achieved was error codes on the decoder screen.
Why can't they just work like any normal system using a menu? Yes UEC is a turd without the glitter!

Has anyone else had any success with it?

Did you ask UEC support what the benefits of the software upgrade was before you tried to install it, or did you go in blindfolded?

The following is the TEXT part of the machine code mentioned above (it can be read by putting the file:- upgrade.uec - in a text editor and then scrolling to the end of the file). It is not the text file included in the zip and reproduced above by dstudd.

I find it rather curious to have an update done this way as there are going to be a legion of users who havent got the internet, either no computer or its only for Porno and dont have a clue about updating anything or want to !!!.
They do constant updates OTA so why not just do it that way and be done with it??
I am presuming the UEC like a PayTv stb can receive updates even when 'OFF' (Standby)so long as it hasnt been turned off at the powerpoint.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Looks like a wild polished turd chase to me.

If it's worth having it will be OTA, Gordan's right, most users couldn't do a USB software/firmware upgrade.
It would be very expensive to have the installer come & do it for you.

    I somewhat disagree.

Companys like Strong have been posting firmware updates online for quite some time.
You download it, plug your memory stick in the USB port, and use the menu's to update the firmware. Worked for me every time.
I've had customers stuff it up, so you simply plug a null-modem cable in the serial port and upload correct firmware from your PC.

Sure a legion of users don't know how, but what's wrong with giving the rest of us the option that do know how, so you can update your firmware to rectify bugs (like bl**dy reboots) and add new functions.
Obviously UEC wouldn't bother posting it online otherwise??

Id rather go through that exercise than having my box rebooting in the middle of something I'm trying to watch while doing an unnecessary OTA update that was done 10 minutes earlier... and probably again 15 minutes later!

If OTA updates could be set to be done manually (which is obviously in the pipeline) or only while the unit is in Standby, it would make life so much easier.

If other manufacturers can make it work, why then so complicated for UEC?...
