    Default PS3 YLOD, what now?

so my PS3 so so unexpectedly died.

was watching my divx movies when it just powered off and started flashing red

it was running bd movies/games/dvds perfectly and outta nowhere now wouldnt start.

quick google, found that i have the dreaded ylod

so what are my options now?
yes, i have searched, but found a bunch of threads about reballs/fluxs/flows
but mean absolutely nothing to me

from what i remember of my console it was 200% working
what are my options from here?

should i pay someone to fix it? melb guys? cheap?
is there a how-to guide to doing it yourself?

You could pay someone to fix it but if they just do their so called "reflow"or "reflux" it will probably be just a matter of time until it happens again. If you get a proper reball it should fix the problem but thats if they actually do it properly. Your other option may be to sell it on ebay as is and let someone else stuff around with it and buy a new one. The cost difference between getting a proper reball done and buying a new one after selling the stuffed one may be minimal for peace of mind for a better designed new console with warranty.

    Hey MrSquiggle

there is a fix - it isn't permanent, most guys here in the know can do it.
Your options - I do semi fix the YLOD but....... this is what I recommend

Your current PS3 is stuffed - it can be repaired, but is temporary

Buy a PS3 slim, get it repaired and transfer your private data to it and give it away or toss it

those that say they can fix it permanently are full of sheit

    Hey MrSquiggle

give it a go - you have nothing to lose

and when you get it going, be aware it will fall over again - eventually

    goodluck

I don't normally fix it but people still insist me to fix it for them because there might be personal photos, files or save files that they need to get out from the hard drive. Apparently you can't just take the hard drive out and put it on another PS3 to see your files.

So it's more of a data recovery service lol.

Question transferring data from a YLOD PS3

    hey guys,

My old PS3 did the YLOD thing and i recently got it fixed but it broke down again 1 month later. I didnt get to transfer all the files so my question is can you transfer the files without getting it fixed again? It may sound like a stupid question but if there's a way I would like to know. Thanks

no I don't believe there is a way - you will need to get it repaired again, the ps3 locks the hard drive to the ps3 it is in and I don't believe there is a 3rd party software that will allow you to read the data from it yet

    talk about perfect timing.

been waiting for cfw for the longest time, finally releases. now its stuffed

new ones on the way, might keep that one clean to play online

patch my old one (if i can get it going again, + playing ''my-own'' games online)

If you are going to want to use the console for some period of time you may want to get it fixed properly. If you do as stated in the above posts it is definitely only temporary using a hot air gun to fix it. Fine if you want to get the data and throw it out as Freekee suggested but you will more than likely stuff the mainboard making it useless to sell to someone else to do a reball or their own fix (It is still an expensive console and I don't believe in throwing it away). The problem using a heat gun is that there is a good chance of the board becoming warped and putting further stress on SMDs, damaging/melting components etc.. If you are going to get a reflow done atleast get someone with a PCB reflow oven or a rework station. This will minimize any chance of warping and uses proper timing and temperature adjustments to reflow the board not just guessing with a heat gun. Better still I think Cwispy on here does reballing and has a rework station, I have never used him before but have spoke to him about it in the past before I had access to a rework station myself. His pricing seemed reasonable at the time and I am sure he will do the job properly for you, atleast this way it will last longer before failing again. I am only suggesting this to you as an option as you already have another console and you are happy to use this as a second console, as even with adequate cooling and reball it still could fail again, whatever extra life you get from it is a bonus

I have asked cwispy directly and at that time (bout 2 months ago) he decided is was still too risky and not to do PS3's

Yes they are an expensive unit - and they shouldn't have such an obvious design flaw - and as this console is designed to be a complete home entertainment media device Sony should bring out software to allow their uses to remove the data and transfer it to a new unit - not rely on dodgy repair people promising the world and charging too much for what an extra month then the same pain?

Maybe he is buying your customers PS3's off ebay and reballing them himself

I have done 3, and 2 are still kicking 9+ months later, the other 1 died a few months after it was done and become a generous parts donor. I admit they don't get much use but I think it can be a little hit and miss with them and to have to do it again under warranty for free is probably why Cwispy will not do them. It is tedious work to do, time consuming and definitely not worth the money you can charge to risk having to do it a second time under warranty for a customer at no charge.

Software to transfer your data from a HDD will come, its just never going to be Sony who release it.

some great advice there mate, for me and for the many many others that are no doubt going to be finding themselves in this situation

take it as being paranoid, but its so damned common for the playstations to break down RIGHT after the manufacturers warranty. they (sony) talk about making a loss selling this unit at release, but it seems almost TOO coincidental that 80-90% of these consoles finding themselves from being perfect -> being useless, ALWAYS after the 1.5year mark. coincidence? purposeful design flaw? who knows.

This is a first for me, machine was maybe 2 years old. out of warranty. YLOD. will be purchasing a slim to replace it.

bought a release PS2 for a pretty penny back in the day. 1-2 years later, inevitable RSOD or DVD DRE. anyone in the know, would know it was a damned common flaw that happened to happen around the 1.5year mark. i purchased a slim to replace it, still kicking strong after years of light use

can only hope the new ps3 will be just as good

i might throw the YLOD on ebay and cut my losses, will leave it untampered with and warranty sticker intact hoping it will attract more $$

I Love playing with the RROD Xbox and the YLOD Sony. A cheap trick after doing a reflow is mounting a extra fan that pumps air across the circuit board and not the heatsinks.

The heatsink sucks the heat out the top of the IC's but the board underneath still heats up over time creating the dry joints on the cpu. Chuck a small fan on the board and I have had my own Xbox running for 2 years now. PS3's have had 2 fail within the first month and 8 have never seen again. (If they fail the second time the solder maybe completely dry) Sell it not worth the effort and probably wont last.

That's disappointing, I guess I'll just have to get a new PS3 then. Thanks anyway.
