Default In search of the Schumann Resonances

I'm up to old tricks again, using wood of course.

Over the last couple of years I've been playing around with VLF reception using various magnetic induction coils, a PC and Spectrum Lab software with good success. This is a spectrogram traced over an 8 hour period of life below 100 Hertz. I have found the traces around the second harmonic of primary power frequency to be highly amusing.

There was a thread about that some time back. Anyway, the next logical step is to see if I can receive those elusive Schumann Resonances.

Inspired by this page for a minimal loop antenna I decided to go for a more round "Stargate" shape rather than boring old square. I had a spare sheet of 3mm ply so cut out two large rings 1.2m in diameter to make a large "spool" to wind the wire on with a polystyrene core. I have nearly 2kg of enamel copper wire I bought years ago from a local electrical supplier so will wind the lot onto the mini-me Stargate.

I bought some OP27 IC's from Hong Kong for the preamp, but am hoping to see a trace of them without using a preamp. This will probably not be possible, but it depends on the noise figure of the sound input device to the PC. I've found the sound card of some PC's to have a much better noise figure than others. The best I have is actually a USB sound device, although these vary in quality as well. I'm getting more in the future to try.

Haven't wound the spool yet, but will keep you all updated on the project as it progresses.

So Learjet, will you be able to observe lightning that's happening around the globe with your antenna?

If you decode a signal from a sub that reads 'missiles away', lemme know ASAP, willya?

Just finished winding the loop. Didn't have quite as much wire as I thought, only 1.6 km . I am sore and exhausted.

Initial tests show greatly increased sensitivity below 2000 Hertz over previous coil antennas. The world below 120 Hertz is a mess with anything and everything electrical spiking.

This spectrogram is from a coil antenna, but it shows lightning quite strongly (horizontal lines) and I see north west cape are doing something different instead of their normal MSK at 19800 Hertz. Maybe this is the missile alert for Don.

Onefella, I can already pick up lightning thousands of km away with the old antenna. It's worse than the 80 metre band in summer.

This next pic shows the sensitivity difference between the old coil antenna and the loop. The loop is far better at low frequencies.

    This pic...

Shows the complete mess below 120 Hertz with the loop indoors. Just listening on headphones, it picks up the computer making all sorts of noises from the other side of the room, the PWM LED dimmer is extremely loud and squeely, sferics are non stop and the noise floor is way high.

I think I have distortion on the 50 Hertz primary. I could not run a preamp under these circumstances. Have to wait for a power outage.

More tests to follow when I recover lol.

Captured a 7 hour long spectrogram last night while I was sleeping. The only AC appliance on in the entire house was the fridge and the HWS, and of course the eee pc netbook to capture it on, though most of the time it was on battery. Most of this stuff must be coming off the power grid.

Millipedes are alive and well in the electrical system lol. There's a faint trace way down at around 7 Hertz. Could that be the first Schumann Resonance?

Are you going to use this to predict the Gold price cycles?

LJ, what do those millipedes @100 Hz signify, a resonant of 50 or something else? And how far from your house is the stargate?

The millipede things at 100Hertz, I can only guess are some artifact from the power grid or appliance. I'm not sure what exactly, I've only just seen them. The only thing on in the house at this time was the fridge and HWS. Could be PLC of some sort I suppose also.

Or maybe it's what's known as "dirty power"?

At this stage I'm just testing it and it's still inside the house. One calm day I'll run it down the back 100 metres away from anything and see what shows up then.

Actually I should do it today while the radar is clear.

Two hour trace with the loop down the backyard. No millipede around 100 Hz. No Schumann Resonances either.

I wonder how much orientation/rotation matters?

Is all that racket @ 100Hz just harmonics from 240v?

Yes. It's a harmonic of the 50 Hertz mains. There are harmonics every 50 Hz up in frequency from then on well into the kHz.

It's man's garbage dump for mains power that gets radiated for miles.

Thought so, though I haven't seen it go past the 4th or 5th harmonic before, then again I've never used a loop like yours either. Perhaps if you could notch filter it out (notches would have to be progressively wider for the harmonics, I suspect) it might dampen the overall noise down some and make the good stuff easier to see...

I've thought about a notch filter for 50 Hz. The harmonics though are too many as this spectrogram shows them right up through 24kHz.

NWC can be seen at 19.8kHz, some horizontal line lightning and a "thing" at 3 -5 kHz going up in frequency. Probably a motor of some sort.

Very mysterious band at VLF and below. Keeps me amused for hours.

I love threads like this, I can't understand most of it, but they are fun anyway.

Yeah, interesting. Would love to look at that NWC stuff, i realise its prolly encrypted but can you get the FSK/MSK stuff to decode?

Not sure how to even attempt that. I have a feeling Digipan will be useless.

    Fair enough.

If you know how to decode the NWC MSK transmissions, then Don wants to know when the missiles are coming.
