easiest way would be to use a cross over cable to setup a simple 2 pc network then use windows remote desktop

or if ya got modem/router with spare ethernet ports run LAN cable to port and use RealVNC (freeware) or tricky way is run wifi router off modem/router and have USB/pcmia card in lappy do it over wifi and use realvnc ..

What do you want to use it for? I mean if you are using it to check downloads I would probably suggest using a Web interface over Remote Desktop but depends how you want to do it.

Windows to Windows I highly suggest RDP over using VNC, VNC is an easy way to do Remote Desktop stuff over multiple OS's but RDP is a better protocol in most cases.
