DVD Recorder with Hard Drive

Might sound like a newb question....but.

Do DVD recorders record to their inbuilt hard drive in VOB format or can they record in mp4 or mpg1 as well/instead.

Do DVD recorders record to their inbuilt hard drive in VOB format or can they record in mp4 or mpg1 as well/instead.

Not sure if it varies from dvd recorder to recorder. Cannot help at the moment as recording a program on LG 80gig hard drive. Later I can copy to DVD and let you know what format it spits out.

I have a Panasonic with an 80GB hard drive. It seems they use some kind of proprietary format for recording to the drive. The electronics also seems to have to see the right size drive as well. If the 80GB is taken out and a larger one put in, it throws up an error.
