Try this Mr Radio, Start - Run - Msconfig - Then select Startup - Then untick a few of them and do a restart and see what happens.
And repeat the procedure till you find the one causing the problems.

Lately my XP machine has developed a new puzzling behaviour at boot up. It loads the desktop and the icons in the quick launch bar then moves on the the system tray. After the first icon appears in the system tray, not always the same one it seems to pause for various periods up to up to two minutes before completing the boot. I can't immediately tell what is loading because the next icon to load after it resumes is not always the same one. Is there a way to track what it is doing and hopefully rectify it. On one occasion, one only, it crashed and restarted during the pause.

download ccleaner
instal it select tools/start up and disable things one by one as mick said
a bit easier than using msconfig and also a handy system cleaner to boot.

This is proving to be more sinister than at first thought. It has progressed to crashing on start and restarting over and over until left to stand for a time. We are now thinking ram or MB.
Can you try a System restore to a time when you were happy with it,

Stripped down and extensively cleaned ... was some dust around surface mounts .... rebuilt and back in service .... so far so good. Hope I can still say that in a couple of weeks.
