    Default Toshiba Bios passwords

    Hi

Have a toshiba laptop that has a Built in HDD user password and for the life of me I cannot get it, anyone know what the default may be? I removed the BIOS lock password by resetting pins etc on the mainboard now this password comes up. Seems to be locked to the HDD as i put in another HDD and it goes past the error.

    Cheers

    what make / model harddisk

This code is typically to protect the contents of the harddisk regardless if it is in the laptop or other device (i.e. Desktop)

Typically there may be a master reset password i.e. Western Digital WDC repeated multiple times. But these wipe the harddisk clean but allow the drive to be re-used.

Some need the firmware (on the HDD) read to recover code. Older drives simply had a flag that could be reset in the firmware. These days the actual drive data is encrypted via the key as it is written to the platter.

Seems as if the HDD password is on the firmware of the HDD, if i put another HDD in, it doesnt prompt 4 the password.

Have booted up with a Linux boot disk looked the HDD via usb and come up as all of the space as unallocated, ie no partitions nothing, must be the firmware password doing this.

Model Is Satellite A100, hdd is a Toshiba MK...... will check the Hdd model later.

These toshies are absolute pain's in the a.....

    Cheers

The password is locked in the firmware of the drive thats for sure, no software cracker will be able to change, reveal or remove it. HDD password protection is part of the ATA standard.

Theres going to be very little you can do. I remember doing a lot of research on the subject for unlocking the original xbox hard drives when the original machine they came out of had be lost/broken.

I remember reading that some device called a logic analyser could do the job but these were expensive and I have no idea how they work.

Unfortunately, I think you're going to be pretty much stuffed . Let us know if you do find any software that can miraculously just disable the password but I dont like your chances.

    Good luck

z80 how the hangers can i put it back exactly where it should be when these stoopid toshibas just randomly assign bios/hdd passwords, this was not user created/stuffed up. Reading up on these toshibas they randomly do it, hard to believe, but ask other toshiba users, sure there will b someone that can confirm this......

    reading up? where?

Never seen or heard of them ""randomly"" doing it...

If you feel you have been wronged then you can legitimately take the complete machine to an authorized repair centre and have it rectified for free.
That feature has been around for only 3 years so warranty will not be an issue.

You described a HD security issue, not a bios password problem.

In any event if you feel this is your problem then read the fine print.

As I said earlier they will fix it for free.....

(I have seen over 2 thousand Toshiba laptops in my workshop just in the last 18 months and have seen your problem once, and it was user caused)

My initial issue was a bios password issue now moved onto the HDD issue, I have seen 2 issues in the last 2 months on this, each time the client swears they never put a password on it as per the link .....

"The computer models listed above may display a "Password =" prompt when the computer is turned on, even though no power-on password has been set......The occurrence of this problem on any particular computer is unpredictable -- it may never happen, but it could happen any time that the computer is turned on"

Thanks mate will take it up with Toshiba again .....

    Cheers

Toshiba would not help, said customer caused it etc etc, directed them to links re the spontenous nature of these passwords occurring, falling on deaf ears....... have gave up, the hdd is now a coffee coaster....
