Clutch is gone...
I have an OLD Mitsubishi van L300 and always had a problem getting it to change gear when I wanted to.
I had to slow down to a certain speed before I could drop down a gear.
Is annoying when I need to turn at an intersection because I am always stuck in too high a gear to get around the corner nicely.
Also when I reverse out of my drive, I have to come to a complete stop before I can locate first gear.
I believe the fault is a syncromesh fault.
But recently I have got where the motor occasionally revs up without any increase in road speed.
This usually occurs when I am going up a hill.
I figure it could be a slipping clutch.
Is it possible for something in the gearbox to be slipping?
It is a manual gearbox.

maybe when you're going up the hill the bald tyres on the rear are slipping on the oil pissing out the rear sump seal and those 300 hp are causing loss of traction - you never know!

Yeah clutch is gone, you can pick up clutch kits for the L300 for about $150.00.
I wish I had an L300, my clutch kit cost $2200.00
Ok, everything said so far looks spot on.
When the gear change is difficult, is up gear, down gear, both and does it "crunch".
If crunching it definitly syncros, id be surprised if its all gears meaning all syncros.
If its crunching and hard to change gears, meaning the gear stick is stuck in gear and or difficult to put into the next, its probably a worn main shaft (edit) or lay shaft.
The clutch problem sounds like its worn but may not be.
When lifting the peddal can you feel the pressure plate release point?
Have you checked the adjustment?
What may have happened is you input shaft on your gearbox may have a worn syncro and worn the shaft itself, the front seal may have leaked and got oil on your clutch plate which in turn is slipping now.
Oh and if your front seal did leak the lack of oil would make it more difficult to change gears.
Anyway what to do regardless of what caused it?
Buy another gearbox from a wreaker and get a aftermarket clutch kit would be the cheapest way out.
Prices, i bought a clutch kit (clutch plate, pressure plate and throwout bearing) for a jap rearwheel drive for $125 aftermarket, not factory and a gearbox for $150 from a wreaker.
A few hours work and a couple of dollars on gear oil should see you back on the road.
Shop around on the phone for the gearbox, negotiate the warranty.
Clutch kits are very expensive from Mitsubishi, try aftermarket shops their a fraction of the price.

The oil is actually pissing out the front camshaft seal I think.
There is some from the rear of the rocker cover gasket though, you may be confusing it with that.
And the tyres aren't bald and slipping.
I think its more that the rubber has deteriorated after 15 years and gone hard and lost its grip.
The gears aren't crunching.
Its more of like I'm gonna snap the linkages leading to the gear box if I push any harder.
It just won't budge.
It is only going down gears I think.
Especially from 2nd down to first, and a little bit from 3rd down to 2nd.
I'll have a go at adjusting the clutch.
Could be that.
If I wasn't such a tight arse I'ld get another vehicle.
And it sort of become part of the family as well.
I guess even the most loved ones are eventually sent off to a retirement home.Or Hospice.

all of the above is pretty much correct but the other thing with those vans is that the bushes on the gear linkages get worn and it makes it hard to find the gears, usually the gear shift will feel kind of sloppy with no distinct H patten left. could be the reason you have trouble finding gears.
Yes ive had this before and sounds like your lay shaft is seizing. The gears have trouble sliding back and forwards on the shaft due to a notch worn in the shaft.
Having said that you should get under and have a look around, especialy at the lever directly at the gear box. Disconnect all the linkages going to it. It will seperate the gear lever from the box so you can get a better idea from where you problem is. Box or linkages.
It may be your linkages seizing possibly as mention by others. You could get under, undo them, put some grease in and also open your gearbox oil filler plug half way up its side, put your finger in and check if you have oil in your box. The oil should be level with plug hole.
While you have your linkages undone you should be able to smoothly move the geabox selector shaft by hand at the gearbox.
If its hard (say even when moving it with a shifter of spanner) chances as the box is rooted. It should move easyly and smoothly with a shifter on the lever.
Some gearboxes have a adjustable screw with a spring a ball bearing under them. This makes the ball bearing fall into a notch when in gear. The more you turn the screw in the tighter the box feels if you go too far. It can almost lock the box in a gear if turned in too far. This screw also helps to stop the box jumping out of gear as it holds the gear better.
It may be too late and possibly have damaged your main or layshaft alread if you feel the lever is too hard to move with a spanner and you undid the adjustment screw and it made no diffrence or it now jumps out of gear.
Honestly for the price of a gearbox, id just junk it while its out if all looks suss as their cheap enough if you shop around.
While you take out the box, check for oil contamination of the clutch before putting a new one in. Fix the oil leak source before going further.
