Default Recomendation on a simple 8 channel DVR

My father-in-law runs a newsagency with an 8-channel video security system.

He has been advised the motherboard on the DVR is dead, and he needs to replace the entire unit. He has been quoted a large amount of dollars to get a new one. He has asked for my opinion.... so I'll ask you for yours!

What is a mid-range price for an 8-channel DVR?

What manufacturer/model gives best bang for buck?

    What manufacturer should he avoid?

Bang for buck in a newsagent would have to be either a Pacific Communications 9ch unit or a Kobi K9 DVR. They are professional DVR's, they can be sourced locally, covered by warranty and the distributors have after sales support as well for peace of mind. You'll need to go through someone with a security licence to purchase from these suppliers.

Then again what is your budget?

    Western suburbs, Melbourne.

What's some rough pricing fellows? He wants to know if the price he's been quoted is in the right ballpark.

All cameras are OK and in situ. Just a matter of plugging in the new PVR unit.

(The Pacific Communications one is the PDR-9LX from ???)

    Default Problem solved

Whew! Opened a can of worms I did!

Problem solved guys.. a big thanks to EVERYONE who provided info.. it was all appreciated.

Got my hands on the unit and found it was a dead motherboard... maybe bad caps given the manufacture date. A replacement new-old-stock motherboard was picked up on ebay for $50, so I'm hopeful that is the extent of the financial damage.

This replacement unit just has to last out the current shop lease, so I'm pretty sure I won't have to touch it again.

Hardknight, do you think that people will except that you are some sort of ex spert or security guru when you have to resort to abusive one liners. Grow up. You can call me what ever you like as I have broad shoulders but I think you need to settle down a bit.
You might like to actually like to inform all of us what your quote would be since you have made it very clear that you think previous posts were a rip off. Should I hold my breath waiting for a genuine reply or should I expect some more abuse.
I gather by your statement above that you have pm'd the original poster and secured your self some business as you describe him as the client. If this is so, it kind of makes a mockery of your earlier comments about george.

If this DVR is going to be installed by you or your father, then I would have to say how can you go past one of those little AVC or CP Cam jobs? I know they are only cheap and what not, but I have had a couple out there for a while now, and they are bulletproof.... They have some pretty cool features as well.... Do a search on CP CAM CCTV or AVC CCTV ....
