Default Error message that I can't get rid of.

Hi. My wife's uncles computer comes up with the folowing error everytime it's turned on

"Windows cannot find C:\documents and settings\user\enxylmf.exe"

You can enter past the error and everything works fine. I think it happened when I removed the dial up software (iinet) and upgraded him to ADSL. He doesn't have the original disks so I can't reinstall and uninstall again.

I've checked with msconfig, run a virus and spam check but nothing. I've searched the net for enxylmf but can't find any mention of the file. He's running Windows XP

    Please help

    Al

enxylmf.exe looks like a randomly generated malware filename (ef lmn xy) and its probably a leftover orphaned malware link

you say you ran virus checks does that include spyware/malware

if not download-install-update and scan with either malwarebytes or spywareblaster

also try running hijackthis and see if that exe is listed in the log file - if so uncheck it

the exe is being called at startup via either the startup directory (remove link if its in the startup directory), the program startup list (use msconfig or cccleaner to uncheck it), the registry (scan the registry for that exe name or use reg cleaner or hijackthis) or another program or infected file is calling it up (run malwarebytes or spywareblaster)

if all else fails you can use systernals utilities (process explorer, process monitor etc) to see what files are linked to that particular error message and manually remove it

Thanks for your help. When I get a chance to have a look at his computer I'll try what you suggested.
