Default Bloody Gearbox :) Help !!!!!

Hi all I have a Nissan Path Finder 1989 model
petrol and it was a 5 speed box

The kids pressured me into getting this 4*4 for them
It only cost $500 with about 6 months reg and
the guy is letting me pay it off
He did tell me it was really hard to get it into reverse thats why
    he was selling it cheep
But when he dropped it of he said it changed gears perfect
and it has for about 2 months me and the kids where happy

Then it started to get hard to put into gear and when selecting reverse
you could hear the gears grinding as if the clutch wasn't stopping
it from spinning around. This would come and go over a few days until last night
I could change gears the easiest I ever could like a hot knife through butter
But it would not move the car
I could feel the car moving like at 10cm an hour and revving it to get home
There is no shudder when i start the car and put it in gear and drop the clutch

Does anyone know anything as I have always done autos even repair them and put new clutch's in them blahh blahh
or even better a service manual for the box itself

    cheers

Sounds like the cluch pressure plate to me there is no syncro on reverse or first hence with bad cluch hard to get in first, reverse it will go into other gears but believe me you are doing damage.
Not sure if you can adjust the cluch these days I haven't work on my own cars for a log time

im with mal sounds like a clutch problem if its hydraulic i'd check the fluid level or cable setup you might be lucky enough to adjust it

    Yes, exactly as explained above.

1/ Check yourve got clutch fluid.

2/ Get someone to operate the clutch. Get under (with engine off) and make sure the slave cylinder is moving out when the clutch is depressed and returns all the way when the clutch pedal is released.

3/Did you smell something burning when driving her? Drop the transmission and check; (A)the throwout bearing, (B) that the pressure plate bolts arnt loose on the flywheel and (C) take the pressure plate off and take a look at your clutch plate, it may be warped, the shockers smashed inside the ring or just glazed and or worn.

I think your box is just fine. Why because its not always tight, pointing to the clutch or its operation.

A better way to put it is yes the clutch was not totaly disenganging but now is not engaging.

This may have been caused by a leaking clutch hydrolic seal and it may now have stuck or jammed in a open position stopping the clutch fork from returning.

But most likely the clutch plate is up the creek. If it warps it will not totally disconnect from the pressure plate, if it them shatters you lose you linings and therefore your clutch.
While the box is out check your throwout bearing (the bearing that presses against the pressure plate), if this has failed and come off its ring expect similar problems.

The only other thing i have seen cause something similar to this is the gearbox bolts to engine block about to fall out. Dont laugh it could have happened. Just check theirs no gap between the 2 of them.

And the throwout bearing lever to fail (crack or worn). Very common on 60's to70's Holdens.

Solution, after checking the hydrolics drop the gearbox and have a visual.
99.9% sure your problems are inside the the bell housing.

When going in that deep youd be crazy not to put a clutch plate, pressure plate and throwout bearing which are all in the clutch kit.

    Hope this helps ya mate.

    Try here
    passwords should be pdftown.com

Afew pages of nissan pdf's, pick the closest 4wd, most of the pathfinders are newer but the principle should be the same.

    Hope this helps.

    Hint; hydrolic trolley workshop jack

Just dont plan on lying under it and resting it on your gut no matter how big or strong you think you are.

Well just came back from the crapper (the mrs insisted i add that) and while in their one last thing dawned on me.

Check that none of your cv or universal joints have come undone.
Happened to me once in a Triumph Stag, she had every gear, really smooth just almost zero drive.

Point is have a good look at the cv joints and external clutch operation before you kill yourself dropping the box.

Thanks guys thats what this forums about, helping each other.

As an aside, whilst you have the gearbox out, check and replace if needed the front gearbox seal, they are prone to leaking in the D22 navara & D21 pathfinders.

I used to own an 88 model pathfinder, not too bad a vehicle.
Heres a hint for you: Dont venture too far away from a petrol station!
(They were noted for their lousy fuel consumption and have a VERY small fuel tank (Less than 55 litres))
