    Default DSL wont turn on.

    Hi all,

My son dropped his DS Lite it fell about 12 inches to the ground. No physical damage to the unit externally but now it won't turn on. I have pulled it apart but nothing looks out of place or broken. When I plug it into mains power the ornage light comes on for a second then goes, likewise when I go to turn it on the green light flickers for a second.

Anyone have any thoughts on this ?

    Thanks

Sounds like you need to replace a fuse.

F1 and F2 are fuses on the motherboard and the symptoms you describe sound like one of those failing.

Save yourself the trouble of replacing them by metering them 1st as they may b ok(provided u have a multimeter) & dont just use a piece of wire to bridge the fuse, they are there for a reason

Other symptons are broken screen, which is what my 2 cents are on

    Hi Ljay,

Yes it was the f2 fuse and unfortunately given the basic tools i have I had to fuse it with some solder...... I know that its wrong and its pure butchery but I had little options available. I mean how small can they make those fuses there was no way I was going to replace it. I'm sure you guys who do it for a living could do it blindfolded but I'm used to working on bigger things than a pinhead.....

    Thanks for your input anyway.

    Cheers

I had the same problem when I put a new Chinese crap bottom screen in. I didn't notice that it didn't have the rubber insulating on the back of the screen when I put it in. its been sitting here in the cupboard for months untill I seen myf360f1 post about the fuse yestorday

I just done the F2 fuse and its working again.

Finally got around to attempting the fuse replacement on a dsl, replaced both fuses but still get the power light flash and nothing else.
I did replace the top lcd screen earlier but there is nothing in the top that could cause a short ?

is the lcd flex cable securely seated in its socket as its a dual row of contacts you need to apply a bit of force to get it right - it won't switch on and will briefly flash the power led if its not in...

Mysterex, you were spot on, checked the cable and it was probably less than 1/2 mm out . Could of saved myself the hassle of replacing the fuses but they were only $5 and now i know how to do it

Well u need to check if its blowing those fuses continously or not.....99% of the time a fuse blows for a reason....the other 1% is just age/premature failure.
I'd also be checking the screens.

Screens are original and i'd say never been removed, i dont think the fuses are constantly blowing but i just replaced them anyway assuming that was the problem.

Faulty screens will cause this problem so will faulty/missing wifi boards.

Use a multi to check the fuses.

if you've tried whats already been mentioned (swapping LCD screens with known working ones & swap the wifi boards) then its time to try reflowing the 2 Arm processors under the slot 1 socket - BGA chips with the same troublesome lead free solder balls

i've had some good success doing this and recovering brain dead dslite motherboards - appears to be the last batch of DS Lites that suffers more from this fault, maybe they rushed the boards out before retooling for the DSi...

I can try one of the kids dsl's and although i have reflow equipment i might just keep it for parts or find anothe mobo if the screens are ok.
    Thanks for your input.
