newbie iphone 3g 3.1.3 Upgrade question
Hi all,
Firstly, Please excuse my ignorance in this
I have a 3g 3.1.3 which i jailbroke (perhaps with blackrain) ages ago...
I wish to update to 4.2.1 but googling the info only presents me with more questions...
I have no idea about basebands/bootloaders/shsh blobs etc...
does the below still apply?
its factory unlocked....
is sn0wbreeze the way to go?

I am also looking into a jailbreak right now Bodo and up until a week ago greenposi0n was the way to go with 4.2.1. My iPod was running earlier firmware also but now 4.3.1 is out from apple...so no untethered jailbreak currently.
I downloaded the older 4.2.1 and tried to update my iPod manually but had no luck...
So wait a couple of weeks for a good 4.3.1 jaibreak.....unless anyone else has better info..

modmyi.com is a good site
the problem with itunes is now adays it doesn't allow upgrading to selected firmware. (usually only the latest).
the latest jailbreaks are tethered ie you have to dick around with phone if phone is turned off.
If your phone is factory unlocked baseband and that are irrelevant to you as they only mattered if you were jailbreaking to unlock your phone.
Good Luck read heaps.
I just jailbroke a phone running 4.1 with limera1n.

Hey bodo
4.2.1 is the highest OS for 3G's and greenpois0n works just fine for the jailbreak
4.3.1 is the latest OS for the 3Gs & 4, currently jailbreakable but only with custom firmware (redsn0w - mac or sn0wbreeze - windows) and is teathered (reboot and you need to teather the jailbreak again)
cheers

What would be the recommended update path to get beyond 3.1.3 on a 3GS ?
Unlock is not essential.
Am thinking 4.2.1 would be the go ?
I'd like to get to 4.x and not really fussed with which one but figure the 'closer' to current release the longer it'd be before needing to do this again.
Also, would anyone have a strategy/approach to getting all things back onto the phone after the update ?
Assume iTunes sync would take care of the AppStore components, contacts and calendar thingys.
But on the Cydia side ? I used AptBackup before but wasn't too happy with the outcome. Have also got a list of packages installed via AppInfo.
Am thinking it might be an opportunity to cleanly put things back ? What do others think here ?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim.....
Latest firmware 4.31 is jailbreakable.

Reason: added a link
as freakee said 4.2.1 is the last firmware supported by apple for the 3g - no more ios support for 3g after that !
the missus has a 3g on 4.2.1 which was running ok before jb
to backup and replace jb apps, use PkgBackup, its available in Cydia
I'd go with a fresh 4.2.1 install (or any other 4.x firmwares if you want) and then jb
missus phone is a bit slow now which she blames me for but she likes the jb apps
I can't tell you if jailbreak has slowed the phone down or whether its just a bit old
the battery doesn't hold charge well which doesn't help
With the apps Itunes has always sorted them and these are ones I've installed thru installous as well. I didn't even know you could back up your apps.
I'm using a 3gs at the moment and I'm noticing it's slower than before, I believe it's because the apps have all updated to make full use of the Iphone 4s capabilities (Retina display etc etc) Maybe its a ploy so we all upgrade to 4s.
When u have jailbroken install installous it's the best app ever.
