Location, location, location plus look at the Digital Ready site, Myswitch etc and all will be explained.
Once you have read the details regarding YOUR location, come back to the forum and troll thru these postings, again its all in the details.
And check out the details regarding the availability of VAST where your other family members live as they may be the solution to your request.

There's plenty of VAST threads.... have you read them?

You can't just buy a VAST smartcard, you have to buy the matched card & decoder..... but then you must qualify to have it activated for commercial channels. (anyone anywhere can have access to ABC/SBS channels on VAST).

As mentioned, availability of access to VAST is on the digital ready website.

Enter your address in the mySwitch box to see if you are eligible.

Considering you have terrestrial signal, with only a couple of channels being an issue, a terrestrial antenna upgrade is probably all you need.

It used to be that if you wanted to qualify for the RABS TV service a technician had to test the signal strength of terrestrial signals 10m above your roof.

Not many antenna installers bothered with the 10m rule for obvious reasons.

I don't know what the signal strength to antenna height requirements are now.

The process is still basically the same for those that are in a designated terrestrial coverage area.... but, they have to wait until at least 6 months prior to the analogue terrestrial shutoff for their area to be granted access to the VAST commercial channels..... stupid, I know.

The good news is that if those viewers already have an official Aurora card registered at the address, they can get VAST now, simply by entering the card number on the VAST registration application.

We have a legit Aurora card and switched to VAST several months ago.

The additional channels are great compared to what's available on Aurora, but the UEC box is still a heap of sh!t, Pictures still freezing and losing sound.

Come on an alternate STB provider.

Have you checked that the STB has received the February Update, if so and your still experiencing problems such as picture freezing, you may have a problem with the STB.
Audio problems seem to be within the transmission, not the box.
There is nothing to stop you obtaining a second or more STB's on that Aurora card and setting it up at your home so long as you have a dish in place if you want to go that path and not do as MTV suggests and check out your Terrestial antenna.

My post about the terrestrial antenna was in relation to the post by DJmatt, not MalleyFowl.

How do I determine what updates the STB has received?
It's left turned on all the time, and the downloads menu is greyed out, so anything else is beyond my control.

In my opinion the box should have been loaded with a proven reliable OS before it was put on the market.

The Current Firmware is Version 2.22

The Version before this was 2.11

    To check:

Go to Menu > Advanced Options > Information >DSD Status

(you should see the below if you have the current Firmware)

    DSD SW: 2.22.2103 (Feb 15 2011 - 12:00:56)
    Midware SW: 2.22.2076 (Feb 15 2011 - 12:00:56)
    Driver SW: 2.22.2104

If your STB requires an update it should get done automatically by OTA update, if the STB is left on, or in standby mode

or if Option 6 in the Menu (DSD Upgrade) is not greyed out, & can be selected you can do the update manually

Your only option in Tasmania, before Jan 2013 to get access to VAST, is to get Traveller Access.

Unless you have a legal Aurora card.

AFAIK Aurora cards are registered to an address & Name, which may or may not be checked when applying for VAST using its number.

So its not really legit if its someone elses

To be perfectly HONEST and arent we ALLLLL?, you cannot use another persons card BUT there is no provision for Sale,Transfer, cancellation etc that I know of regarding the Aurora card system.
So, as long as you have all the correct details from the previous owner/User go for it.
As for 'them' checking anything, I wouldnt hold my breath.

The criteria relating to VAST with currently-registered Aurora cards, is that the Aurora card must be registered to the installation address.

The Aurora card doesn't have to be in your name, it may be registered to another person, but it MUST be registered at the installation address (eg: not a postal address).

It's the 'installation' address that is checked for VAST approval.

So, for example, if there are a few people living at a particular address and one has an Aurora card registered at that address, others living at that address can apply for VAST using that Aurora card number... BUT, they can only apply for a VAST service at the same address as that which is registered for that Aurora card.

Yes, you can sell an acivated Aurora and/or VAST card/box, but you MUST notify the relevant service provider that you have done so and the purchaser must apply for that card/box to be transferred into their name and if the purchaser resides at a different address than the card was previously registered, they will need to satisfy the provider that they are eligible to access that service at their address..... just the same as any new application.

Transferring card ownership/change of address is covered in the terms & conditions.

There are legal responsibilities placed on the registered owner of a registered smartcard to notify Aurora/VAST if that card is sold/transferred to another person.
