i have run live cd before but the speed is slow just wondering if i install it on a usb drive how to

    1= boot it
2= make sure i can read the other drives (ntfs)
    3= still boot windows

some help here would be appreciated as i tried this on another machine before and after i mounted drives windows could not see the drives and i lost all the data.

i already have tried running it in windows but it runs very slow and the GUI will not allow minimize and maximize screens properly. Hence why i want it to run as a boot to speed things up i have a eeepc an it flies but if i can run linux on my desktop with its cpu and ram it will fry the sky and ill never need to wait and best of all no more mr GATES

wubi install into widows results in a dual boot system that runs fast enough for me,, no problems with minimise/maxmise, running "3d cube" with a lot of the frills turned on.

I can see everything including shared drives on other windows pcs. When you boot into windows you can't see anything saved in the ubuntu file system.

if you already have windows installed and install linux on another partition, you may not be able to boot into windows without re-installing grub.

same if you have linux installed and install any version of windows on another partition.

you will then need to boot into the live cd, open a terminal window and do the following:

    > sudo grub
    > root (hd0,0) - assuming this is the boot hard disk.....
    > setup (hd0)
    > exit

reboot and the grub menu will appear, allowing you to choose your o/s.

Installing using wubi run from in windows results in a true dual boot... without partitioning your HD, it creates a single large file the size of the ubuntu "hard drive" within the windows partition.

    Bluetooth keyboard and mouse?

    1. Go to System > Preferences > Bluetooth or right-click on the Bluetooth applet and choose Preferences.
    2. Under "Mode of operation" choose "Visible and connectable for other devices"
    3. Change to the Services tab, there will be a list of Available services. On that list, click once on Input service.
    4. Put your input device in "pair" or "connect" mode. This is usually done with a physical button on or under the device.
    5. In the Input Devices section, click "Add". A new window will appear with the input devices visible (in this example, a mouse).
-----------1. Mouse: Click on the mouse to choose it and click "Connect". A confirmation message will appear and the device should be connected.
-----------2. Keyboard: Click on the keyboard to choose it and click "Connect". It will prompt you to enter a password. Enter any password in the dialog, e.g. "1234", and then enter the exact same password on the keyboard, followed by Enter, and the device should be connected.

got the keyboard and mouse working by unpluging and repluging in the usb but i read that this needs to be done every boot.

there is no preferences tab in the bluetooth right or left click only "add this as drawer to panel" & "add this as menu to panel"

System -> Administation -> Hardware Drivers... you should be able to select the proprietary drivers for nvidia graphic drivers.

re bluetooth... I left click on on bluetooth in System -> preferences or right click on the bluetooth icon in the task bar and select preferences. If you don't have those preferences then try the Add/remove and add

    Bluetooth Analyzer
    Bluetooth utilities for GNOME
This package contains various GNOME applets to detect bluetooth adapters and configure them.

System -> Administation ->Services unlock and select Bluetooth device management.

To get 3d cube running I installed, but maybe did not need to to get basic cube effects:

    "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm)
    Compiz configuration settings manager
The OpenCompositing Project brings 3D desktop visual effects that improve usability of the X Window System and provide increased productivity.
This package contains the compizconfig settings manager.

This application is provided by the Ubuntu community."

I also had to use the "Proprietary Drivers for nvida" that were not initially installed so that I could select under "System" => "Preferences" in the "Appearence Preferences" the "Visual Effects" tab and selected "extra".

Then under "System" => "Preferences" selected "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings" I ticked "Desktop Cube", Rotate Cube", etc... there are lots of preferences.
