    Default Self-amalgamating tape sticky?

So here's newbie question of the day #2. Since I made myself look silly in my crimper question, I might as well go for broke here

I bought this self-amalgamating tape from Ebay

I assumed self-amalgamating tape was like stronger version of plumbers thread tape, thats just sticks to itself.

This one arrived as is labelled PVC Insulation tape, and is sticky like normal insulation tape you buy here. But according the the eBay listing, it's self-amalgamating tape.

Am I just misunderstanding what it is, or do I have the wrong thing?

    Thanks. Russell.

Butyl rubber tape is what is usually used. It should feel and act like rubber, not plastic.
It should come in a sealed plastic bag, usually boxed.
It should not have one side adhesive. Both sides of the tape feel the same.

It should come in a box, like this

It is several times thicker than PVC electrical tape.

It is as different from PVC electrical tape as it is from duct tape or cello tape.
Reality is an invention of my imagination.

Yeah but I can't get to a Jaycar, and got caught by the old Caveat Emptor, thinking $5 off eBay was better than $20 + postage from Jaycar

When using the Butyl tape as Fernbay posted, you stretch it (as its rubber) and it thins out and sticks together making a water proof seal.

Really good stuff around the LNB connections outside.

No its not sticky straight off the roll, it sticks like a elastic type grip when stretched.

Yeah that's what I was expecting. Time to discuss the eBay advert with the seller.....

    Man,

I don't think I should have gotten out of bed this morning.

While the tape I have is sticky, it's only slightly sticky, and it is stretchy and does seem to mould to the connector shape, so maybe it's OK after all, just slightly different manufactured.

Of course, dopey me only checks this AFTER he's ordered some new stuff online from the UK

    Russell.

I have my doubts about that tape, as it says it's PVC.

Also, being yellow, it's less likely to be UV resistant.

I use the tape shown in Fernbay's pic.

It forms a gas-tight coverage of joints.

I can honestly say that I've never ever worried about using any tape on any of my setups and never had any issues.
Must have been lucky all this time.

Well, as I said, I've ordered some black stuff from the Uk that looks the real deal. I'll simply get my setup working as is, as be ready to put it on when it arrives.

Found some at Dick Smith more than $5. Something like $15 I think.

Tape available from most elelectrical and electronic outlets. Was told to keep my fingers off the the tape when installing but you will find that, that is not so simple. Some difficulty when trying to secure a connection on a splitter. As Wierdo said 'never used it' You need to stretch the the butyl as you apply
it. Start below the connection and spiral upwards. Too much pressure and the the tape will break. Overlap each turn by ?half. When installed, press all around with your fingers. Then cover with black electrical tape to protect from U.V. These 'Bubble connectors' sound great with their inbuilt seal, but that's another tool and expense to add to my collection.

I think the tape is probably Ok, just check if it’s got 2 layers and you will need to peel off the plastic one and use the rubbery one, Worth a try.
