You are going to get out the big stick.... and you may break your XP.... backup any data, email, bookmarks etc.
If you are willing to have a go...IF you are worried about stuffing up your XP run and post the log file in this tread. There is a huge tutorial here
1. Hit ctrl alt del and select task manager, click on the Processes tab and right click on the run32.exe process and click end process, do the same with getst.exe. Now look at ALL the other processes and do a google search on each one to see if any are known adware trojans. If so take note and stop the process.
2. Then open up msconfig by Start-> Run.. and type in msconfig. Click on the startup tab and check each application in there in google to see if it is safe to have, if you see run32.exe or getst.exe uncheck them.
3. Now do a search on your hard drive for all the applications/processes you have found above that are suspect and cut and paste each one into a temporary directory.
4. Reboot and search your processes, msconfig and HD and see if anything has reappeared, if it has you have missed the actual application that is causing the problem. If you get a warning box pop up after reboot complaining about a missing file take note of this and check if it is a valid application or is the trojan. If you decide it is a trojan look in msconfig startup again and uncheck it.
5. Reboot again and repeat the above.
6. Reboot again and repeat the above.
7. If all is running OK you can delete those applications you pasted into the temporary directory earlier.
How did you get the trojan? Have you installed anything d/l off the net, have you run anything off the net? Is your java up to date? Go here and check it
Try this. Run it in safe mode. When it has finished, do a complete scan with it.
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/launch.exe
It will tell you what it found. If nothing found, good!
Pretty good for a freebie.
The best thing is to know all your running processes, the less you have running, the better, that way you can spot malware/trojans/viruses a lot quicker, mostly.
