The guy who used to live next door to me had one.
He used it to get back and forward to work after losing his licence for drink driving.
I bought one of these a week or 2 ago to try and regain some fitness with assisted pedalling after nearly 2 years of not much exercise due to a back injury.
I was surprised at the power it has, considering I am a fairly big bloke (115kg) it wouldnt have a problem getting to 60 km/h. It has to be run in at 20km/h but really wants to go a lot faster
After doing a bit of Googling, you can apparently buy a "shift kit" which converts the power to use existing gears on the bike (mine is a single speed/gear). With a shift kit, people are hitting 90-100 km/h !
Thats seriously dangerous stuff for a standard push bike. I think 60 will be more than fast enough for me

well if the motor is over 200 watts of power you may have problems with the law, and will confiscate the bike for test and fine the Fu*k out of you, but thats in SA not sure about the rest of Oz, they are great fun just built one with my son but in the broadtrack racer style.

200w is the power limit in NSW as well. i guess if you see the boys in blue you could shut off the motor and start pedalling your guts out , they cant get you for that.
keep the quiet muffler on it too , attracts less attention.
cyclists are bad enough those on those things are worse, forever nearly running the bastards over when the run lights or think they are quick enough to cross the road infront of you. There are heaps up here and cops in the last few weeks have finally started pulling them over thank fk

dont say linux if i wanted it id install it
Yeah, I can imagine kids on them Luckily I havent seen any down my way so the cops shouldnt be too savage. I only ride via back streets and try to avoid going the same way twice as no one wants to hear a 2 stroke going up and down there street.
200 watts is the limit in most states, these put out about 2500 though I have seen some advertised that put out 3200.
I was really keen to get to get one of these bikes.
But after searching around and seeing numbers like $8000 for one i lost intrest quickly. I figured I'd pay off a $2000 electric bike in less than a year in fuel savings by riding to work and the shops and only using the car a couple of times a week for the bigger trips.
How long does a tank of fuel generally last?

Most guys buy a Ferrari in their midlife crisis Andrew
How much was that bike if you don't mind me asking?
Looks cool, I want one

You saying I'm old ? Anyway, I bought a BMW Z3 Roadster about 5 years ago
I paid $650 for it. I figured it was reasonable, the bike is a brand new Malvern Star and the motors are 2-3 hundred.
If you have a bike handy, fitting a motor shouldnt be too hard for anyone with general handyman skills. I'm just broken and lazy
jok11n, yeah they would be good for drink drivers. But if you were pissed on one the cops would probably charge you.
Gerbetron, I havent gone through a tank yet. Mine is a 2.5 litre tank......I am guessing maybe 100 kms plus ? I reckon its now about half full and I would have done at least 50 k's.

These are more fun to ride

for sure they would, what I meant but didn't explain too well is that every time I see someone riding one I think to myself that the person riding it has been done DUI previously, without trying to sterotype the ones I've seen being ridden around in my area all have similar looking riders, mid 30's, fluro workwear (storeman or similar) and wouldn't look out of place hanging over the bar at the local (no offense)
price seems fair anyway, I've seen the conversion kits on eBay, same setup used on many old trikes here in China that get used as transport for recyclers, scrap dealers etc, a lot of those though have gone to electric now as it's cheaper to setup and run
LOL Pissing myself laughing.
Hey Sanity, one question mate how did you intend to lose weight and get fit if its got a engine?
Jokes aside, make sure you wear a good helmet, leather gloves and dare i say leathers and pads.
I might sound like a idiot but one fall at speed can seriously Fark you up, come to think about it, with your bad back i think your playing with fire.
Just be cautious on it is what im saying, at speed a fall will rip flesh from the bone.
EDIT; Where can you get the engines from? It actually looks fun.

I should go and change the thread title.
Me thinks it's not a pushbike at all
Reality is an invention of my imagination.

You can pedal as well if you like while its running. You actually have to pedal to start the motor, you also have to pedal to take off. You need to get to sort of jogging pace before you give it a rev and let the clutch out, otherwise you would probably stall or burn the clutch out.
Engine galore on Ebay

This is what I mean about these crazy shift kits

In a nutshell, instead of being like my setup with the chain drive on the left powering a single large one speed cog, they use the right hand side and your existing 18-21 speed gears....#### that

Not sure if this is the same clip but it shows a close up of the gears at the start
