Default Hills HST2 Meter on VAST

    Hi all,
I am having trouble setting my Hills HST2 for the VAST parameters.
I can see the signal strength but cannot lock onto the MER.
I have all the right parmeters and have installed the channel list that hills sent me.
    Any advice would be good,
    Thanks
    Jack

I don't think that meter does DVBS2, which VAST uses.

Is there a firmware upgrade that will allow me to read DVBS2 ?

Your hardware needs to be capable.

    Not that I know of.

It's usually an entire tuner, so I doubt that model can be upgraded.

Suggest you contact Hills for clarification.

I have the manual here, it only does DVB and DSS.
Go to Google Maps and click “Get Directions.” Get directions leading from China to Taiwan, and look at instruction #48.

Thick as two bricks but wouldnt that meter find the Tune channel for C1 and once you have that locked in, wouldnt that do in the short term?

Yes, it will, but like any signal, if you need to optimise particular frequencies/transponders, you need instrumentation designed for it.

Funny that govt endorsment for digital switchover installers approves the meter even tho it doesn't do DVBS2. All they wanted is a meter that does MER + BER. I got the ok for domestic, commercial and sat installation with that meter. Won't make much difference in my area tho as there are no VAST installs for me to do.
I wonder if they can run a tuning channel to optimise VAST but in DVBS.

    Cheers,
    Nando.

Shows whoever approved that meter for VAST is as thick as me by presuming if you can tune one channel (Tune Channel on C1) thats all you need.

Yes. I Agree, Having the tuning channel on DVBS would enable us all to fine tune the MER.

Did you follow this up with Hills?

Have a look at this eBay auction for a HST-2. I looks like they haves taken a photo of the box, it does say DVB-S2 upgradable.

Maybe Hills changed to the Rover Scout ST2+ which is DVB-S2 capable.

Interesting.... if it is 'upgradeable", it would require a hardware upgrade, not just firmware.

easy peasy upgrade, just undo case screws, remove contents, insert new contents, replace screws and away you go.
OHHHH, did I mention it might cost near as much for the new innards as one bought new without a case ???

I spoke to hills about this meter and they told me that i will not do DVBS2 and therefore cannot read the MER on VAST.
However they have a new meter available that will do DVBS2.
