Default What do antivirus manufacturers get by giving free antivirus?

Avast, avira, panda etc. give them for free. How do they survive without money? Who will purchase paid antivirus when free ones are most effective?

They give away a plain/simple version and when you see it is a great product you buy the Pro version, and now i hear what your saying and i am with you
But there are soooooo many people out there that want the BEST of everything and don't mind paying for it, me i am a tight arse, plain and simple LOL
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

    It's a numbers game.

X number of people will buy a PC and it will come with free antivirus (malware?) like Norton AV.

After 6 months it will expire and a big scary warning will come up saying that your in danger and unprotected.

A certain percentage of them will reach for the credit card and renew the subscription, mainly because they simply do not know any better.
Reality is an invention of my imagination.
