Maker marked J Hudson and Co Birmingham, who were the official military supplier. Dated 1915 as per picture.
If only it could talk......I wonder how many men this whistle sent over the top ?

Documented history on items makes them extremely valuable. If I had that, I would have paid 10-20x more.
I have since bought about 10 more whistles
I will post some up when I get them. I intend to collect 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. I have already purchased a few ARP whisles. They were used by Air Raid wardens during the blitz on London during WW2.

Interestingly, they claim to know who owned some. I wonder if they come with any documented proof or just hearsay. Hearsay has no value whatsoever.

OK, heres a bit of a preview of what else I have bought.
Firstly, 2 x ARP whistles.
ARP stands for Air Raid Precaution, in WW2 in england there were over a million ARP wardens mostly people with jobs who worked during the day and did ARP duty at night.
It was their duty to make sure people had all their lights blocked out so enemy bombers couldnt target them. They also assisted during German Bomber attacks rescuing people killed and wounded, including their own ARP colleagues.

Most of the whistles you will see are made by Joseph Hudson and Co. However, on October 26 1940 the Hudson factory in Birmingham was heavily damaged when a high explosive bomb froma German Bomber crashed through the roof and exploded in the basement. Although Hudson kept manufacturing through this time, it must have been at a reduced rate as the government also authorised Adie Bros to manufacture military whistles in 1940 and 1941 only.

I also read an interesting story about the bombing. Apparently when the bomb hit whistles went everywhere and a young boy who was 12 decided to pilfer one. He later became a railway guard and worked at that job using the same whisle until he retired in the late 1980's. Upon retirement he went to the Hudson factory and returned the whistle dated 1940 to them as he thought it wouldnt be right if he kept it
This is another Hudson whistle dated 1915 that I just bought, it is exactly the same as the one in the original post. Except that I paid half what I paid for the first one
