G'Day Cobber,
Best of luck to you, but your chances are slim.
The southern lights, also called the aurora australis or southern polar lights, are the Southern Hemisphere's Antarctic counterpart to the Northern Hemisphere's Arctic northern lights, or aurora borealis. Much less land actually extends into the higher latitudes of the southern hemisphere compared to the northern hemisphere. As a result, there are relatively few areas on land from which to view the southern lights, with the exception of the difficult-to-reach continent of Antarctica itself. Most of these viewing areas are quite remote and require a long journey to reach.

Have seen them many times in Tassie. Picture from ones a week or so ago, were used as the backdrop to the weather forecast on TV. Most spectacular ones I have seen were a few years ago. Pulled off the road and just watched in amazement. All those cars flying past - I thought 'Look at what you are missing. You may never see one so good again'. There were massive shafts/cylinders of light that appeared to come from the ground and shone up and moved from place to place. Go for it and enjoy!

I remember back in 92 or 93, I'm in Geelong and the Aurora was visible from here, quite rare or So I'm led to believe to see this this far north, Even now I can clearly remember seeing huge red pillars of light eminating from the polar region, never seen anything like, They appeared again a few laters around 94 or 95 this time I was driving home at night and thought and looking through the windscreen thought that seems strange...when I got out of the car I could see what I can only descibe as huge curtains of red right across the southern sky, truly an amazing sight....which brings me back to orginal posting, I'm wondering if there just maybe a chance? we might see this natural phenomenom again wth this solar flare and susequent ejection from the sun reportedly so large?

Hi Osci. Apparently, approximately 8+ minunutes for light from the sun to reach the earth. So we must have missed have it. Too overcast to see anything at the moment.Look forward to the next time.
