We now have the memristor (at last)!
It changes it's value dependent on the amount of DC current/voltage with the time applied and stays that way when the voltage is removed.
This value can then be measured using AC without changing it.
They can be extremely small and react very fast.
They are already talking about non volatile memory banks with 100 Gbit/cm2 density (with a potential 1Tbit/cm2) and DRAM access speeds, so I envision the 1TB (super)USB stick and the 1 Petabyte solid state hard drive on the horizon, which should be a relief for many
Some interesting analogue applications could arise too.
I dont know what resolution will be possible (that will depend on the detecting circuit) but they are talking of a large variation of the resistance, so if we can store any value between 10ohm and 10Mohm and read the cells using AD converters (possibly thousands or millions of converters parallel for high speed) I don't even want to think about how much data could be stored and quickly accessed.
Unfortunately they are not in Dick Smith yet.
This kind of approach to create new electronic components should radically change our future technology on consumer and research level.
