Ive tried several times from 401.0MHz to 403.0MHz from 23:00 - 01:00GMT on a discone antenna, as well as a quadrifilar antenna I built for NOAA satellites, however without success. I might try it with a vertical antenna as the quadrifilar is built for 137MHz, and has a nice isotropic pattern, and the discone has a great forward gain, but is not great for signals above the antenna (ie satellites and balloons). I also have a 40M dipole antenna but its way outside the band but Ill give it a whirl next time with the vertical UHF antenna.

Just got to find the time right now but still really keen to get onto this.

You guys down under are a lot better with your tracking of weather balloons, we (in the states) keep crashing ours in Roswell!

you have to remember these things are only 63mW i can't get anything with my vhf antennas or my uhf CB 6db but works fine with my magnet mount base and a RFI 400~420 4.5db antenna. range i am getting with the RFI antenna is around 320km's. a piece of RG58 with the braid striped back 185mm gets a range of about 200km's but fills up with water when it rains. the makers say the radiosonde is 63mW but i have a few that are less than 40mW and one that is 65mW. i am 280km's from the launch site and can get them ok after they hit around 10000M around 10:30AM SA time.
