What happens is u sign up for adsl2+ (theroritcal 20meg), but get stuff all speed, ie 1.5mg, may as well just get adsl 1.5. Does the isp, ie Telstra drop the price down ie to an adsl price?

Telstra r trying hard to get my business back. They say I can get adsl2+, but they would say anything. What happens if i sign up and cant get it. I have went thru heaps of websites and cannot find a list of adsl2+ exchanges, have tried but it is telling me my nearest xchange 4 adsl2+ is as follows :
Line of Sight: 3186 m
Estimated Cable: 3823 m
Estimated Attenuation: 53
Estimated Maximum Speed: 2000
Not a good result, 2meg is nowhere near 20meg. I have an xchange (sub xchange) 500 metres away max, maybe telstra r getting confused with that??
Anyone got any god websites to use/research/list exchanges?

I cant see that being right. I get 6 MB on an 8 MB connection on ADSL1 and I am 4 km's from the exchange. I can also get ADSL2 from Telstra but no one else.
its the Attenuation that plays a big factor in the achievable speed the higher it is the slower the connection.
i know of people who are less than 2km from the exchange on adsl2 and can not get over 4000 due to the high Attenuation because their line is shitfull
here is a calculator to see what i mean, most modems will be able to give you the numbers you need to input

Nope, and they wont tell you either. I was with Telstra ADSL 2+ 20meg and only got 4meg. Had heaps of dramas with dropouts, so they throttled me back to 3 meg, and denied doing so. I finally got them to admit I was on aluminum cable, which does NOT suit broadband.
Unless absolutely necessary, anyone signing up with these clowns has rocks in their head.

So my attenuation is 26 on my adsl connection and use the calculator and get the following:

You gotta watch it too with these ISP's when they say, Yes you can get ADSL2+.
I checked a couple of months ago on the TPG website and entered my phone number to be greeted with "Yes you can get ADSL2+"
I thought you beauty. Since then I've found out that eventhough my exchange is ADSL2 enabled, I'm connected through a RIM and can't get it.
I would have thought that if your line was ADSL capable, it would automaticly be ADSL2 capable. Apparently not :-(
Rang Telstra and they said the distance to use is 1600 metres plus sub exchange to house. Sub exchange to house is 200metres line of sight (google maps), so 1883 like my modem says is fine, not sure where they get the 1600 metres from though. How can it be only 1880 odd when line of sight to the dslam exchange is over 3kms? Anyone know how this works?
So would I be correct in using 1880 metres as the distance for the attenuation calculation, if so, I would be happy with that speed.

Iam with Bigpond now paying $69 per month 1500kbps with a fixed phone line on a 2 year contract
I was enquiring about their adsl+2 and they told me it will cost me $89 per month is it really worth it? ive heard its much difference surfing only when you download movies and music.
Further to my posts above re wot speeds I could get, my neighbour's (next door) modem says their attenuation is 53, whereas mine says 26. Adsl2exchange website says it would be exactly that, line attenuation of 53.
Would this be because he is connected the main exchange further away and I am connected to a sub exchange which is much closer. We are with 2 different carriers.
Still trying to workout wot spped I would get on adsl2+. Do I use my adsl1 attenuation of 26 or the adsl2exchange website details?

I got the attenuation details (61) from when I enquired on the Your adsl2 + site as when I enquired on adsl2, it said,

As I said, I am vague on this stuff, but why would the Your adsl2 site say 1500 is achievable, and the fremnet one say 2412?
I was thinking of moving from my primitive 256/64 with westnet to 1500 adsl1 with tpg @ $49.95, but then noticed ADSL2 was also available, and the same tpg say adsl2 is 39.95 per month. I figured go with adsl 2???? What would you do.

not only the line in the street plays a part in the attenuation but also the quality of the line in the house / filters being used etc.Plug your modem on his line if he lets you and see what it reads( you wont need any log in details etc)
Though it does seem weird that your next door neighbour has such a big difference best bet would be trying to find what exchange you are actually connected to ( ring your current isp and ask them )
