Step One: Let the monitoring centre know what you're about to do, as they may receive a tamper signal when you open the box. If they don't, the guy that installed it didn't do a proper job.
Step Two: Open box. When the sirens sound, enter the PIN to silence it as normal (quicker if a second person does this to be nice to your neighbours).
Step three: Change battery. If you turn off the power, you'll lose the date/time when you unplug the battery. If you leave it on, some will say you might blow up the panel but I've never seen it happen. Anyone?
You should also write on the battery "Date installed: XXXX". Depending who you ask, you can use black texta on some white electrical tape or a silver marker pen directly on the battery (which approach is a source of ongoing holy war at this site).
Dispose of the old battery in an environmentally friendly and/or entertaining manner.
