cant write to dvd or cd

i have a lite on burner when i right click to burn throu xp it tells me
"there is no disc in the Drive"
"please insert a writable cd intpo drive E:\.

what is wrong?
also when i try to burn with Nero it tells me i have an illegal dsc

can any body help im so frustrated

i have put the latest firmware in.
i have uninstalled thr drivers.
