    Default Southern Cross Network

    First of i apologize if this has been asked before as i have not been able to find any reference to it.

    In Victoria out around the Bright area with a genuine Aurora card currently on SCTV its showing a live afl game, but with a vast card its showing on the southern cross (central ) network a movie, can someone explain why this is the case as im under the impression Aurora is being replaced by Vast and you would still get the same content for the area you had an official Aurora card for.

    Aurora only has one 'zone' for SC, which is licensed to cover all of Australia east of the WA border.

    Unlike Aurora's single area coverage, VAST has several different zones, which can carry different programming, just as their terrestrial counterparts do.

    The eastern states are divided into north & south, there is a central zone and the recently-commenced WA services.

    Thanks for the reply mtv, i had a thought it would be something to do with the zoning, looks like live afl football might be gone for us once aurora gets turned off, might have to look at the travellers option in a few years time unless theres another way round it..

    Apparently, the central zone (NT) get most of the live east coast footy/rugby live, so what you're seeing on Aurora now, is probably showing now on the central zone on VAST.

    Just out of curiosity does the central zone include SA? Don't the WA guys get AFL live as well?

    Did you look at Channel 10 on VAST? The TV guide lists AFL. To confuse things, Channel 10 is Southern Cross on terrestrial and Channel 7 is Southern Cross on VAST.

    Not sure if they split central into north & south as well.

    ABC and SBS are separate for SA and NT

    I think WA will get live footy.... (smacca will be able to confirm that one)

    Even QLD get some AFL/NRL live

    SA is also south, half hour time difference. NT is also north, half hour time difference.

    I really havent made a note of this but it seems that my Terrestial Digital area channel and its VAST equivelent do a bit of 'Time Shifting' regarding some AFL/NFL matches.
    To me at the moment my VAST (NSW South) is more Victorian oriented in many ways as I notice certain shows about Sydney are replaced by either Football matches (AFL) or those God Awefull 'Football Talk Fests', again Victorian oriented.
    We have enough NFL boofheads pontificating without adding insult to injury with a group of AFL hasbeens spouting off.
    I am still not impressed that my 5pm TEN News is Melbourne and not Sydney.
    I am curious to know what NSW North (aka Qld) will have as their Capitol City news, Brisbane?

    Southern Cross seems to hold the licences to 'rebroadcast' the commercial channels into regional areas which tends to get a bit confusing as to which actual 'channel' your watching.

    The VAST northern zone (Qld and NT) is Brisbane oriented. News is Brisbane news.The VAST zones appear to be aligned with daylight saving zones.

    Yeah, the VAST programme schedules do my bloody head in. I've worked out that VAST North matches Aurora Central programming. It's the South channels that are different.

    Imparja North -> Nine Bris
    Imparja South -> Nine Syd
    SCTV North -> Seven Bris (except selected AFL from Ten)
    SCTV South -> Seven Bris (except news is from Melb, and when AFL is on North it sometimes 'switches' to Seven Melb, meaning either no game is shown, or the same game is 1/2 to 1 hr delayed)
    Ten North -> Ten Bris
    Ten South -> Ten Melb

    I think they're trying to preserve the Qld focus on SCTV South because they have to by law. Hypothetically, if WIN WA went into NT and SA, they'd probably have to continue showing WA programming on the channels, except where sports rights force them to take NT- or SA-specific programming. You'll see SCTV South still shows Queensland Weekender, Great South East (Qld) and the like. Also, the news on all South channels must come from either Sydney or Melbourne, otherwise they'd have nothing to show at 6pm if they stuck with Brisbane news during daylight savings like Aurora.

    last time I checked, (away from home this week)

    Vast had 12 bouquets (Australia wide, that is)

    & I guess you could count a Bouquet for each state........

    but at least some states may have more than one bouquet,

    interested to see what they do with them......

    Edit:

    We should start a list of the Name of the bouquet, that people have....

    As we still have 2 years before all areas are 'Switched Over' and hopefully small niggles like Capitol City news can be covered either on the 'base' channel or on one of the '400 News' Channels.
    Providing it doesnt impinge on some crap distribution agreement, I cant see why those '400' news channels cant cover programs as basically they are a waste of transponder space for the minimal amount of news carried on them presently.

    I have a vast box in South Australia i have the northern channels and i can tell you it eliminates the 30 minute time different between here and the eastern states so this is a BIG BIG advantage for SA viewers just apply for the travllers option very easy to do dont even have to give your real name if you are scared. As for the afl we Will not get it live it is on a 1 hour delay on Friday night same as in Melbourne i have 7sctv central. And this will get you live Australia open tennis nights sessions. And also give you the cricket at 6.00pm when the news is on you wont miss out on the first 8 overs of the odi night sessions

    This prompts me to ask about the recent Tour d' France on SBS as it seems while it was 'Live' in each area, it didnt start at the same time which means if I am correct, SA and WA lost that part of the race.
    I would have thought they could have arranged to either time delay the race or reschedule the advertised programs in that area.
    But then the commercial channels have played around with events to fit the regular programming.

    Jmans comments shows the complete idiocy of this whole idea of the VAST segregation and encryption.
