what does it matter if it works?...if u sent it flashed to microsoft then....just bung a back up in there if the backup works then its your drive.
I got my 360 back from microsoft after a red ring of death repair. I don't know if the drive has been replaced, any easy way to tell without cracking it ?
I believe they've switched out the M/B, as before it went to them the pins in one of the front USB ports were bent and the plastic bit was snapped and now they are brand new and perfect.
The inside the dvd tray looks to be a grey colour but I can't remember what it was before that.
Thanks in advance.

Ahhh, thats what you get for being on holidays for 5 weeks. It looks like a tool has already been found that may be able to help with the chipset on this new drive.
I have always wondered why they don't put the EEPROM in the controller chip and make it harder to modify, so they finally did it...
Trouble is that even if a tool is found to read/write the firmware of the new controller it will take months to work out a way around it. Pretty confident though.
If its any consolation my 360 is at microsoft right now for the 3rd time for 3rl repairs, if I had of known about this new drive I would have fixed the friggin thing myself since at least none of mine have ever come back and this is their third go at it. I just hope they don't change the drive this time.

Check out pages 12 and 13 of . Someone has stuck some pics up and suggested some ways you can tell if it's the new drive without opening it up

They are changing the drives. My son had the Samsung/Toshiba Drive and now has the BENQ VAD6038 drive. Got it back yesterday.

Hi there, if its a "new" benq drive, thats exactly the one you don't want, Apparently the new one appears the same from the outside, it only becomes apparent when you open the 360, traditional methods to flash the new BenQ have so far failed.
The drive is becoming known as the "Lite-on" drive with a BenQ badge on it, but the tray is identical to the old BenQ that was flashable.
there is loads of info on xboxhacker and xboxscene, regrettably no good news yet.
Sorry if this is bad news for u
LOL glad I didn't wait for it Pokedad .. and got the one off Harry88 ...

Sorry Tez, did not see that link, looks like u can tell without opening the box sorta....well I guess I will have to wait with fingers crossed they don't change my drive....grrr
Still in some respects I do since my kids want to play on xbox live (With original disks) and my original firmware was lost in a HD death...it was the first one I ever did, customer firmwares are stored on a memory stick as well as emailed to them these days.
Well they changed the drive this time and gave me a free game. Kids playing it today because of teacher strike so I do not know what drive it is other than its a Benq...will check tomorrow. Lucky I have the originals for them to play with
Why didn't I get a free game!!?!?!
Burnt again by Microsoft. They just keep climbing higher and higher up 'the list'.......tez
LOL...well it was the third time they tried to fix it...I actually tried my luck and asked for 12 months subscription to live, they said no to that and gave me a free game instead. But alas I now have a total of 3 months free subscription (1 month each time they fixed it), a free copy of mass effect and a console with completely new innards so I can't really complain, and they really do turn them around fast, every time I sent it in they turned it around in a week.
Got my 360 back today after about a week and it has a old style benq in it
The new ones are unflashable for now
Well for a start it flashed....
From what I read on xbox-scene the foil tabs on the sides of the drives are the easiest way to tell without completely opening the box.
