Computer resetting - tough one :(
OK, It's not often that I'm beaten, but this has be stumped. Mate bought me his computer and said that it resets every time he plugs in the network cable. I thought this was a bit odd, but sure enough it did it for me too.
I played around about a bit with the seating of the ram, changed the power supply, and made sure everything was earthed properly - but to no avail.
Then I bought a NIC and install it - bugger me ! same thing happens on the nic
So I go down the path of it being a virus, so far I've thrown avg, trend, spyhunter, spyware cease, and a few others at it with no significant hits (couple of dodgy looking cookies).
I am currently about to try the top 100 removal tool listed in a thread below, and I will admit that it's a bit hard to update the virus definitions when I cant plug in a network cable - but nothing seems to work.
If I cant figure it out by tomorrow night I will re format it.
I'm hoping somebody has a good idea

I had something similar recently with a Dell Inspiron, disabled the onboard network, added a new card and the problem went to the new network card, same sort of thought process with what was the cause etc, ended up doing a fresh install on a new hard drive and the problem resurfaced after about 30 minutes into a new build, ended up being a motherboard problem, wasted a lot of time on it thinking it was software related as something like this normally would be
Just a stab in the dark but it might be worth uninstalling and re-installing TCP/IP and any other installed protocols.
Might help, go to device manager and find out the manufacture of the network adapter. Try to update to the latest drivers, they might have got corrupted.
I had a IBM Laptop that did that to me after a fresh install and after lots of rooting around it ended up being the chipset drivers
I wouldn't do a format i would chuck a spare HDD in there and do a install
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
Bit defender is still working away atm, but I'll download all the new mobo drivers and update them. That shouldn't take very long.

have a good look at the NIC it self, make sure that the cooper pins are not bent or touching each other?
it's looks like a hardware issue to me

Have you tried going into safe mode with network support if it works at least you'll be able to update any outdated antivirus etc.

Yeah, I tried safemode, and it still resetI doubt it's the actual network port as (I mentioned) I put in a whole new card (with the onboard both enabled and diabled) it does the same thing- this is what led me to believeing it was software related.
The other thing is that it did it at his house with his cable, and it does it with mine - so it's not the cable either.
Bit defender top 100 removal has found 5 threats so far, so maybe I'll be luck - else the new chipset drivers are being d/loaded (I'm surprised there was even an update in the last 12 months) - so I'll install them later tonight as well.

Edit - well Bit defender found/fixed 9 problems - but it didn't solve the issue

sorry mate, when you say reset you mean restart? if so have you tried disabling automatic restart to see if you get a blue screen and what message you get?
Try booting the computer with hirens bood cd then plug in the network cable. If it resets its probably hardware.
If you plug it in during boot up prior to windows loading does it reboot immedietly or only when windows loads?
Yes, sorry, meant restart. This was actually one of the first things I tried to do. I figured if I got the bsod I woul dat least have an error code that I could google. Unfortutnately I couldn't find the option on this computer to do this. I've just googled and found there is more than one way to set this option. i would
1: throw in a spare hdd
2: remove all but one stick or ram ( ptake all out and spare one if you have one )
3: remove video card and install a spare if you have one
4: unplug everything that is not essential.
5: install a new os on the spare drive to do testing.
Now if all is working properly i would one by one re install ram etc with a reboot and test after each item is re installed.

I did swap around the ram. I removed the video card, and it's currently running on the onboard video. I'll unplug the floppy and cdrom tonight to see if that makes a difference.

OK, for those playing along at home, and for others reading this who are having a similar problem (I hate it when you google and find a situation similar to your own, but the OP doesn't bother to update on how they fixed the problem) here is my conclusion.
It turned out to be some sort of virus. Unfortunately I don't know which one (there were several names - I just deleted the lot), but the program that eventually got rid of it was the Kaspersky Rescue CD 10. I actually found it in the PM section (best $20 I've spent for ages !!). Took an hour or so to scan - I then connected the lan cable, updated, and scanned again. I reset and tested and it's been running for the last 5 minutes (never lasted more than about 30 seconds). So I believe it to be fixed (touch wood).
