Brief summary of action leading to fate :
Shortly before midnight on Friday the 5th of May 1917 , Lance Corporal Jones was with the 4th Battalion occupying trenches on the Hindenburg Line near Bullecourt standing with his back to the trench in an anticipation of a german attack. A german shell exploded above or in the trench with a piece of shrapnel striking Lance Corporal Jones in the upper body. His final words were " I'm done " to 670 Pte Charles Smith also of A Company 11 Platoon and he passed away within a brief period of time.
He was taken away by stretcher bearers and was buried just behind the front line and a small wooden cross with his name was erected.
