FWIW
I own nuvi 250, 250W, 760, 1250 and a Dakota 20.
They ALL operate perfectly on any of my 10 or so genuine Garmin adapters.
Output is 5VDC.
Would anybody know if the car charger for Nuvi 255W can also be used on Nuvi 1490?
I would think the chargers for the two units are swappable ... just making sure.

Yes, if its a Genuine Garmin power adapter, definitely.
The only difference may be that my 1490T power adapter has a radio receiver built in to the cable for traffic updates, your 255 adapter may not as I think the radio receiver is an optional accessory for that model, with or without the radio adapter it will work.
Didn't your 1490 come with a power adapter??
If it's an aftermarket 12/5v USB power adapter & it works OK on your 255 then it should be OK on your 1490.
** Beware of some USB cigarette lighter adapters as they may output more than 5v DC! I have one that is labelled as 5v USB that outputs 11v & it killed the USB interface on my first GPS, a Garmin ETrex Vista several years ago. I now have another that outputs a genuine 5v.**

I have yet to receive my 1490 in a few days.
But yes, I believe it comes with the 12V power adapter with an antenna on the cable itself. I'm planning to simply fix the 1490 adapter on the car and use the 255W adapter for indoor use (with 12V power supply) ... thereby freeing myself from having to lug around with the 1490 cable.
I tend to do a lot of indoor tinkering with my gps gadgets ... changing typ files on maps, special poi's, etc. ... and embarassed to admit damaging the USB port of the 255W ... so the 255W adapter is now free to be used on the 1490.
Thanks for the assurances.
Good that will work out fine, the 1490 will also come with a USB cable that will connect & power the unit from a live USB port on your PC/Laptop, while you are tinkering with Maps, POI's & typ files.
Have fun.
