nintendo 3ds modding

hey guys, let me start by saying i know little and nothing about ds's
a friends son has a 3ds and i was telling her about some young guys at work having modded ds's with a card (i presume a micro sd card) with 100 or 200 games off ebay on it for bugger all.
is this possible with the 3ds?
and what is actually done to the 3ds if this is possible, is it voiding the warranty?
is it even modded or do you just buy the cards with tons of games and they play them just like that?

Yes it is possible but u can only play DS games, not 3DS based games...its the same process as for DS Lite Dsi etc, just a sd card & any of the multitude of cards out there.
