Angry Need a third opinion about the YLOD issue

So recently I've been coming across this YLOD with my PS3 Console

I called up sony and they were going to charge me a pretty huge fee to get it
repaired. Plus I had to wait 6 weeks to get it resolved!

now I came across this website thats owned by a PS3 repairman called Rob Sheffield who also owns a PS3 repair shop locared in Melbourne.

he claims you can get the YLOD permanently fixed by showing you how to do it yourself with a step by step guide. which costs $37.

He also claims on how to permanently fix other issues like DNS issues, HDMI issues and etc by following his guides and videos.

Now thats pretty appealing to me since I'm not going to fork out $200 for a fault and problem that is sony's to begin with and have to wait 4 - 6 weeks for it to get repaired. I just want to see if anyone else has dealt with him or know anything else I should know before I go ahead and make a decision.

if you want more info here's the any further suggestions is much appreciated

avoid the website, if you really want DIY guides look on youtube.

Won't work well / in the long run though.

Best would be to buy a new slim console ~$300 now.

    I agree with Urban

I repair them purely to allow the owners to transfer their data across to a new PS3 Slim that I recommend them to buy.......

you can pull them down and do the flux heat gun trick but it won't last

buy a new slim, fix the old one yourself, transfer all your data across to the new one - ditch the old one

Thank you both for that. I will have a look into buying a new ps3 slim and transferring all the data across.

as for the old PS3 R.I.P probably pay a visit to the recycling yard.

with that being covered. any DIY videos in particular you could recommend?

This guy should be reported to consumer repairs for false advertising , there is NO fix for this problem apart from replacing the board like Sony does.
There are temporary hacks to bring it back to life so you can save everything off before it dies again which it WILL shortly afterwards.
The $37 guide will show you how to cook it with a paint stripper heat gun , the same as the free youtube video's do.

Sounds like all he is charging for is information that you can find here for free. And making false claims about a permanent fix.

Interestingly this has been around for quite a while. If you search google for "ps3lightsfix.com scam" you will see how long this scammer has been going for. This is simply some dirtbag going after gullible peoples money.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

sounds pretty serious. specially being a scammer. makes you think, all that energy and effort using to scam people can actually be used to do some good and build a better name for themselves. they think its a quick and easy way to make $$$

Any reason the link you posted in your original post seems to show you as a referrer ?

Considering this is a massive marketing website and paying affiliates money, I have to ask the question.

Speaking from experience AKA did this last week....

    1. Buy a new slim console (even though they are crap compared to the old one)
    2. get a girlfriend / wife / sister / mother
    3. steal hair dryer from above mentioned girlfriend / wife / sister / mother
    4. take slim ps3 out of box
    5. put old ps3 into box upside down with back vents pointing out the opening of the box.
    6. put box down so ps3 is resting on its back like a distressed turtle
    7. turn on hairdryer on flat out and as hot as it gets
    8. point it straight into the rear vents of the ps3 from about an inch and a half away and slowly move left to right for 15mins - be careful not to melt the plastic if you can help it.
    9. leave ps3 in box and get a room fan in front of the box on flat out blowing straight into the vents for 20 mins
    10. take ps3 out of box and plug it in and hit the go button. If it doesn't work repeat process again for another 15 and then 20 mins (I had to do it a second time) - if it has worked quickly grab the disk out that is no doubt stuck in there (black ops for me) and set the data transfer utility happening so it transfers all of your stuff to the new horrible slim ps3 after about a day.
    11. Job done tiger.

No need to pull it apart etc etc. this is a temporary fix only however. Some ps3s last a couple of minutes - mine has been going strong for quite a while now as if it never got the YLOD.

I have the means to do the proper heat gun trick but don't have the time so I gave this a shot and it works - couldn't believe it to be honest... Kinda feel like selling the horrible slim that I bought now. Only problem is I have lost all confidence in the old one which is a bummer....
