    Default Solar calculation

    Can anyone give me a rough idea on this ?

    A 5kw grid system in Melbourne...... what would its approx annual output be in Kw's ?

    If it is facing North and has Zero Shade , using good quality panels on a good quality inverter it should make 7300Kwh per yeah +/- 10%
    If it is using Lucky Dragon rubbish components you will probably do close to the same for around 12 to 18 months until the panels start blistering and going yellow or the inverter explodes .

    Sanity, my 1.5kw system on these spring days is generating on average 6-7kw per day. North facing panels no shade. I have seen then generate 1.6kw in feburary this year at one stage. Was getting close to 10kw per day then.

    I have seen a few figures quoted on whirlpool but just wanted to check roughly what it would be as they tend to have some dick pulling competions there at times

    Not sure if this offer is of value to you but it lists the daily output in all states vs. system size.



    I have a 1 KW system and I am considering what the return on investment i would see if I expanded my system prior to the expiry of the 66 cent feed in in Victoria at the end of September for systems ordered after that date.

    i suspect I am better off paying the power company.

    That's pretty much on the mark , you can safely allow 4kwh per 1kw of installed panels averaged over the entire year , some days will be 2Kwh , some days 10Kwh but these numbers aren't important it's only the yearly average.
    Any Shade will dramatically effect these figures.

    Ain't that the truth !! , always best to err on the conservative side than on the side of output figure on brand new panels that should be producing the best they ever will.

    You know mate a bit like a bride , it's the best they will ever get , it's all down hill from then :lol

    Just had a look at my inverter, 813KW generated in 204 days makes an average on 3.985KW/day from my 1.5KW system.

    That's actually not bad considering we have only just come out of winter the lowest production time , you will find that as you get closer to 364 days the total average should come up to around 6Kwh per day.

    I did my own install/design using sharp pannels and sharp inverter 1.6Kw. Been in for 56 days now. 406 kW average is 7.25 kW hours/day

    calculation rule of thumb if your panels are mounted at the correct inclination and orientation for your latitude i.e. Perth 32° degrees latitude north facing ( an angle of approximately 32° is the best, but anywhere between 20° and 40° is optimal for around a 90% efficiency) approximately 32° inclination you should expect to see yearly average 4.5 times your kw installation. A directly East or West facing panel will never operate at better than 85% of its rated output. also expect 1% los each year due to natural degradation.


    From this you can see 1 kw installation correctly installed in Perth should expect to get an yearly average of 4.5 KW per day.

    Melbourne is app 38° and falls in the 20° and 40°

    In southern victoria a 5kw system will make about 7.5 MW per year.

    As low as 13kw/day in Winter, up to 35kw/day in summer.

    If you run a small aquarium motor pump recycling water into a 44gal drum hooked up as a drip feed system to cool behind the panels in summer you will make up to 20% more power....(a proven fact.)


    In Melbourne just multiply a correctly setup system by a factor 4.5 then the number of days and it will be pretty spot on.


    (5kwx4.20x365=7665kw)

    Some example data

    Cell Temp is usually approx 25C above ambient temp (rule of thumb) Therefore cell temp @ 70C is approx ambient temp of 45C

    STC is standard test conditions - cell temp 25C there ambient temp 0C

    Thin Film Kaneka HB110(110W Pannel) at various cell temps and their Pmp(max power point) very little change in current, heat has a greater effect on voltage
    0C 119W 25C (STC) 110W 70C 93W

    Mono Jinko JK190M (190W Panel) at various cell temps
    0C 212W 25C(STC) 190W 70C 149W

    Hybrid Sanyo HIP215NKE1 (215W Panel)
    0C 231W 25C(STC) 215W 70C 185W

    Therefore to get a 20% gain in output the actual cell temp will have to be reduced by quite a lot or by using panels with a very poor temp coefficient.

    I said 20% and I say it with experience.

    Water cooling works, I've proven it.

    Then again I've only used BP monocrystalline panel products for the last 25 years...whats this "Jinko, Kineka" stuff?....LOL

    Sounds to me like a hippy dope smoking non BCSE "accreditted" installer of the Nimbin mob to me.

    Your BP panels have a temp coef similar to the Jinko panels so the results would be very similar. Work it out if you don't believe me!!

    In other words the facts just don't stack up to support your claim.

    The amount of water needed to cool down an entire array's cell temps by at least 25deg C would not come from a fish tank pump.

    Don't waste your time doing this at home boys and girls as it won't work!!

    Hi Sanity, If you want to get a reasonably accurate estimate use the following Choose AUS Melbourne from the dropdown in the bottom right corner and hit Start PVWatts for International Sites. On the next screen fill in the kWatts, use 0.9 for the DC to AC Derate factor and put in your roof pitch for array tilt. Hit calculate and you have a reasonable estimate.
